FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Last week I listed some questions to help us take spiritual stock of our life in Christ.  It can be very easy, even natural, for us to evaluate our progress in life according to the standards of this world.  Making decisions based on instinct and the general flow of the society around us can delude us into feeling that we are on the right course.  And yet from time to time something happens that moves us to ask, “What is the right course, anyway?” It is at these times—when we feel moved to search for deeper meaning about life—that God is standing right next to us, eager to lift us up and show us his magnificent plan for our lives and for all humanity.  It’s at these times that he is calling us, offering us an experience of his love that helps put our whole life in perspective.

Take a moment to reflect upon four unique ways God has broken into history—Creation, the Incarnation and Paschal Mystery of Christ, Pentecost, and the Second Coming of Jesus.  In these interventions we can notice the wonder and beauty of all of God’s creation.  We can marvel at God becoming a human being, the God-Man who dies and rises for us.  We can be awed by God’s great trust in us to continue the mission of redemption in his gift of the Spirit at Pentecost.  And, we can dare to hope that there is something great that awaits us after death by contemplating the Second Coming of Christ.

Through this process of reflection, meditation, and contemplation, we become more aware of our place in the world and in God’s care.  We take more soberly our individual responsibilities in our families, in our church, and in our world.  We strive to reach out and raise up those who have fallen by the way.  Our life in Christ is too important to waste on trivialities.  Let us seek the Lord’s presence in our day to day life and give thanks to the God who is so good to us.

Your brother in Christ,

Fr. Jamie

SEVEN REASONS OF VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

As a Catholic people we are called to vibrant parish life: 1) to be a Eucharistic Community, united in worship around the table of the Lord; 2) to be a center of religious education and sacramental life for all our people, at all levels; 3) to be a caring and welcoming community of faith, and an evangelizing presence in the world around us; 4) to be missionary in spirit and action, serving the needs of the poor and less fortunate; 5) to work toward a just society for all people; 6) to be witnesses to the presence of Christ, and to inspire others to embrace Christ more profoundly; and, 7) to be open to the working of the Holy Spirit among us, and to God’s love and providence in our lives.

CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WANTED…

The theme of today's readings is "Election" and "Mission."  In the Old Testament, God chose Israel and named the people of Israel as his own. The Israelites were God's elect. Throughout the scriptures, we can see that along with this idea of election comes a responsibility on the part of the people God has chosen.

In the New Testament, Jesus is the elect one, the anointed one, the Christ.  Early Christians understood themselves to be God's holy and elect people because of the love of God shown to them in Jesus. Just as in Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament literature makes the point that "election" requires a response of faithful obedience and entails obligations on Jesus' followers to live holy and fruitful lives. Those who experience God's love and grace are impelled to participate all the more in preparing for and building up the kingdom of God.

We are all called to build up the Kingdom of God. The Parish School of Religion is looking for "Kingdom Builders" among the parishioners to help in the religious formation of our children.  Please call Diana McCormick at (216) 475-4300 to discuss your role on the construction crew.

PLEASE HELP US KEEP “UP TO DATE”

If you’ve recently had a child, and the baptism took place at another parish; please let us know so we can update our files.

If a child has moved out of your home, and is living on their own, please let us know.

If you are a young adult, supporting yourself, living on your own or with your parents, you should be independently registered at our parish.

If your son or daughter has gotten married, at a parish other than St. Martin’s, please let us know so we can make the appropriate notation in our records.

If you have changed your address or phone number, please let us know so we can have the correct information on file.

ATTENTION YOUTH!  SUMMER VACATION PLANS

Youth Ministry would like to thank all the teens that volunteered their time and energy to share their faith with the parish this past school year.  It was a great year full of memories and fun! Due to the numerous commitments of the Youth during the summer, however, no activities are scheduled for the months of June and July.  Use the time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.  Have a fantastic summer and keep your eyes open- activities will resume in August!

HEALING HUMOR

Two lady friends were talking.  One said to the other: “You know what-you-call-its daughter?  Well, she and whos-its son went to the whats-its and to the thingamajig  and got married.  Didn’t you hear about it?”

Responded the second: “Yes, I did, but this is the first time I’ve heard the details!”

(from STEVE ALLEN’S PRIVATE JOKE FILE, 2000)

Jesus gives us some details on how to go on mission to proclaim his Good News.  We are reminded to travel light with the goods of this world and to be fully loaded with the gifts of the Spirit.
