TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Moses ratifies the covenant by offering a thanksgiving sacrifice and by sprinkling blood over the people. The new covenant, the law’s obligation, is ratified in the blood of Christ, the unblemished offering poured out for us.

FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
Taking stock—part 3.
Have you ever noticed that we may be very limited in scope in reading some situations? Or made a judgment about somebody with only limited information? For example, we may look at this day and judge it to be not much more than a series of tasks and events. But whenever we think about our lives in such a limited way, we miss out on the wonder and joy of simply being alive. We also risk reducing God to a limited view instead of allowing God to expand our vision.
As we practice fixing our eyes on God and the unfolding of his plan, we see that our very life is gift and that everything around us is a reflection of God’s greatness. We begin to sense the mystery that we are created for eternity, for heaven, and that we will live forever. The more we let God lift us out of our mundane, common, earthbound vision, the more we want our daily lives to be in step with God’s purposes.
When our eyes are fixed only on the things of this earth and not God, we are left with limited resources. We do not gain God’s strength and guidance, God’s unending power, wisdom and love. Such vision is limited and can never satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts—our inborn desire to be united with God.
The more our eyes are fixed on God, the more clearly we see that earthly dignity based on wealth and power is so weak and unpredictable. Our lives are strengthened as we seek a firm foundation in the Lord, thereby developing a dignity and value that lasts forever.
To know God as God wants us to know him; we need to practice lifting our eyes and our hearts towards the ways that God has concretely acted in our world and in our lives. Invest some time this week in prayer to reflect how God has broken into world history with creating all things in God’s image and likeness, with sending his Son into the world for our salvation, with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and with the promise of his Son to return at the end of time. Take the time as well to consider how God has broken into your personal life to show you that you are loved immensely.
Your brother in Christ,
Fr. Jamie
MAINTENANCE WORK BEING DONE
Tarring the church roof over the vestibule of the church took place this week. Caulking the upper roof will take place during the summer. Repairing the school roof has taken place. Fixing and replacing sidewalks as well as work on the parking lot are also on the summer agenda
LITURGICAL CHANGES
On August 19, the Diocese of Cleveland will host a seminar on the liturgical changes which will begin in the Diocese of Cleveland on the First Sunday of Advent 2003. We will go over those changes with you so that we can all be on the same page. These changes are to promote the dignity of the celebration of mass and deepen in our hearts the truth of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
HOW TO MAINTAIN VIBRANT PARISH LIFE
In order to maintain and support vibrant parish life, every parish is called:
to consider the needs of an area broader than the traditional territory of the parish;
to work with other parishes, offering better ministry to our Catholic people and the larger community than any individual parish could provide alone;
to work together with other faith communities, serving the common good and celebrating our shared heritage as children of God.
HOSPITAL VISITATION
Because of the recently promulgated Privacy Act, parish visitation to the hospitalized can occur only at the request of the patient. Let us know if you or a loved one is in hospital and wants a visit from the rectory. We will do our best to follow up with a visit.

TO BE A SHEPHERD FOR OUR CHILDREN…
The theme of today's readings is "Pastoral Ministry" in the Church. Pastoral Ministry can be described as any kind of service that shows others the shepherding care of God and is designed to help people recognize and respond to the saving presence of God in this world. Involvement in pastoral ministry allows us to live out our baptismal call to serve others. Do you feel called to serve others in our parish? Please consider joining the PSR faculty. You can be a shepherd of young souls. Call Diana McCormick (216) 475-4300 for more information and to pick up your shepherd's crook.
PLEASE HELP US KEEP “UP TO DATE”
If you’ve recently had a child and the baptism took place at another parish; please let us know so we can update our files.
If a child has moved out of your home, and is living on their own, please let us know.
If you are a young adult, supporting yourself, living on your own or with your parents, you should be independently registered at our parish.
If your son or daughter has gotten married, at a parish other than St. Martin’s, please let us know so we can make the appropriate notation in our records.
If you have changed your address or phone number, please let us know so we can have the correct information on file.
ATTENTION YOUTH! SUMMER VACATION PLANS
Youth Ministry would like to thank all the teens that volunteered their time and energy to share their faith with the parish this past school year. It was a great year full of memories and fun! Due to the numerous commitments of the Youth during the summer, however, no activities are scheduled for the months of June and July. Use the time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Have a fantastic summer and keep your eyes open- activities will resume in August!
“ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS” – ALERT
The Arts and Environment Committee will begin selling 2004 edition after Labor Day. Once again the books will cost $25.00 if purchased before December 1. St. Martin’s will realize a profit of $8.00 per book. Last year we sold 80 books. We hope to surpass that amount this year. Watch the bulletin for further updates. Thank you!

Epitaph on dentist’s tombstone—Here lies Dr. Krelman, filling his last cavity.
(from STEVE ALLEN’S PRIVATE JOKE FILE, 2000)
Jesus fills our emptiness with his presence. What he desires of us is our time and attention. So, he speaks to us, his disciples that we should come away with him to a deserted place for refreshment. May his refreshment fill our lives during every season of the year.
