  The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is an action, education program, initiated in 1969 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States.
    The mission of CCHD, to attack the causes of poverty by empowering the poor, is rooted in the basic principles of the social teachings of the Catholic Church; further, CCHD seeks to carry out the Church’s option for the poor through the empowerment of poor people; educate Catholics about the causes of poverty; and build solidarity among diverse groups in our society by providing ways for them to engage in the empowerment process.   The primary objective of CCHD is to fund projects developed by poverty groups that work towards systemic change, economic strength and political power, and to educate Americans about the conditions and causes of poverty.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

         Catholic Relief Services (CRS) was founded in 1943 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and disadvantaged outside of  the United States.  The fundamental motivating force in all activities of CRS is the Gospel of Jesus Christ as it pertains to the alleviation of human suffering, the development of people and the fostering of charity and justice in the world.

Catholic Relief Services gives active witness to the mandate of Jesus Christ to respond to human needs in the following ways:
*   by responding to victims of natural and man-made disasters;
*   by providing assistance to the poor to alleviate their immediate needs;
*   by supporting self-help programs which involve people and communities in their own development;
*   by collaborating with religious and nonsectarian persons and groups of goodwill in programs and projects
     which contribute to a more equitable society;
*   by helping educate the people of the United States to fulfill their moral responsibilities in alleviating
     human suffering, removing its causes, and promoting social justice.

In an effort to better implement the National Conference of Catholic Bishops Statement "Called to Global Solidarity," Bishop Anthony M. Pilla commissioned the Diocesan Council on Global Solidarity on October 19, 2001.  For more details call the Diocesan Catholic Relief Services Office at 440-245-5043.
