80% of irrigation water goes to 17 Western states whose climate is too dry and soil make-up inappropriate to be used for growing the crops.

 

Water used to produce 1 lb. of:

 

Lettuce – 23 gal.            Tomatoes – 23gal.                     Potatoes – 24 gal.

 

Wheat – 25 gal.             Carrots – 33 gal.                        Chicken – 815 gal.

 

Beef – 5,214 gal.

To process a 1,000 lb steer = enough water to float a battleship

 

1,000 quarts of water are used to produce one quart of orange juice.

 

Ogallala aquifer provides 30% of the total U.S. groundwater for irrigation…which is left from melted glaciers.

This aquifer is going down 3-10 ft. per year (13 trilllion gal.)

 

80% of the grain grown is grown to fatten cattle.
