6th SUNDAY IN RDINARY TIME WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

Jesus manifests the powerful, healing love of God by curing the leper who was forced to live under severe restrictions by Jewish legislation. He turned to Jesus in his need and was filled with joy. We are called to imitate the healing and compassionate Jesus.

THE MISSION IS COMING

Mark your calendars for the evenings of March 30, 31, and April 1 for the Vibrant Parish Life Mission.

While the St. Martin VPL team plans the mission, we are inviting our neighboring parishes to come and to take part in the mission. Frs. Foster, Mahoney, and Mazanec have agreed to make presentations at the mission, a different priest speaking on each night. The talks will be approximately 15 minutes in length, because there will be a variety of other kinds of experiences to enliven our hearts.

PARISH OFFICE

The parish office will be closed on Monday, February 17, for President’s Day.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear friends,

Many fears surround us this week. There is fear over what seems to be an inevitable war with Sadam Hussein and Iraq. There are fears in regards to the development of nuclear weapons by North Korea. Our country is on an ‘orange’ alert, signaling a real fear of terrorist attacks. We are fearful of what all these things could do to our economy. (We have seen gas prices spiraling upwards.) We are fearful of what all these things may do to our lifestyle. Most of all, we fear for the safety of what we cherish the most, our families, our friends, our communities, our church, our jobs, and ourselves.

Our Lord frequently told individuals, the apostles and the disciples, when they were anxious, under stress, or uncertain of events: "Be not afraid; it is I. I am with you." Those words are no less true today than when Jesus spoke them initially two thousand years ago.

Because the Lord is with us and will never leave us, the Holy Spirit will guide us somehow through the most difficult of times. I believe that God will lead the Church, especially in her bishops and priest leaders, to more authentic gospel living as she recovers from the clergy scandal. I believe that the same God will also guide the course of events for our nation and world as well.

The key to overcoming all fear lies in our total trust in Jesus, in his word and in his promises. After all, this world is not to be our final resting place. It’s merely the beginning place of eternity. In no way am I advocating the abandonment of caution and foresight. Our government is telling us to make certain preparations in our homes, just in case of attack. However, let us not be governed by fear. Let us be moved by love, instead. Let our prayers rise like incense and let our acts of service toward other be a constant sign of "God who is with us."

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Jamie

PULPIT SHARING THIS WEEKEND

On Sunday, February 16, Fr. Foster will be here for the 11:00 am mass; Fr. Mahoney will be at St. Wenceslas for their 11:00 mass; Fr. Mazanec goes to St. Pius X for their 11:30 am mass. On Saturday, February 22, Fr. Tom Winkel, pastor of St. Mary, Bedford, gets into the rotation. At 4:30 pm Fr. Winkel will preside at St. Pius X, Fr. Mahoney at St. Wenceslas, and Fr. Foster at St. Martin’s. Fr. Mazanec goes to St. Mary’s for the 5:00 pm mass.

The rotation will continue into June. The different parish communities have welcomed warmly the neighboring pastors to their churches. The purpose of the pulpit sharing is to have the neighboring parish communities meet the different pastors, to learn more about one another, and to help each other to be ‘Church’, vibrantly alive with Christ.

LINDA MCCLEAN

BECOMES A PASTORAL MINISTER

After many years of prayer and study, the day has arrived for Linda McClean, our parish comptroller/bookkeeper, to become a Certified Pastoral Minister for the Diocese of Cleveland. Bishop Pilla will commission Linda and ten others at the 10:00 am Mass at the Cathedral on Saturday, February 22. Linda’s gift in ministry will be primarily to the sick, homebound, the seniors, the dying and the grieving. She is also allowed to lead the Liturgy of the Word with Communion Service, such as we have on Tuesday mornings. And, fortunately, Linda remains our parish bookkeeper/comptroller. Congratulations, Linda!

HOSPITAL VISITATION

Because of the patient Privacy Act, some hospitals (generally, the secular hospitals) are reluctant to share computer printouts with us. Therefore it is important that you let us know of parishioners who are in hospital so that we may visit them.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING

Any girl or boy, fifth grade on up, who is not currently an altar server, may contact the rectory with your name, school, and phone number.

A SANCTUARY CROSS

Please contact the rectory if you are interested in looking into the possibility of having a sanctuary cross for the church. We still need a few more folks who would like to discern the need and desire of our parish community for such a cross, to consider the kind of cross/crucifix, to create a funding plan for it, and to determine the location of the cross. Contact the rectory if you would like to help out with this project.

MORE REFLECTIONS BY BISHOP ANTHONY PILLA

ON VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

"I recognize that the diocesan administration will need to respond to the issues that are most appropriately addressed on a diocesan level. For example, in the future assignment of priests, we will continue to carefully assess the sacramental and priestly responsibilities needed within a parish and cluster area, and consider different alternatives, based upon both pastoral needs and the gifts and readiness of priests to be assigned. These alternatives may include shared assignments that include parish ministry as well as other ministries (e.g. chaplaincy, diocesan ministry); assigning a pastor or priest to more than one parish; placement of a deacon, religious or lay person to serve as Parish Life Coordinator; or the assignment of a pastoral team (priests, deacons, religious, lay persons) for two or more parishes. I welcome proposals from parishes and parish clusters regarding new and creative ways of addressing parish staffing configurations in your area, within the present discipline of the Church."

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Who are the outcasts in our families? Is it not time to pray, fast and ask for understanding, healing and reconciliation among long-time estranged family members? Be the one who asks Jesus for healing.

Worry is the darkroom in which

"negatives" are developed.

HEALING HUMOR

Little Sammy wrote an essay on parents for his 6th grade class. In part he wrote, "We get our parents when they are so old that it’s very hard to change their ways."

(from THE RETURN OF THE GOOD CLEAN JOKES, compiled by Bob Phillips, 1986)

The closer we get to Jesus, the more we are changed. Lepers were changed; they were healed of their infirmities. All who want to know Jesus will be changed, renewed, made whole, and lifted up by the encounter. How blessed we are that we can draw closer to the Lord in many ways: in prayer, through the Scriptures, in nature, in our human relationships, in the sacraments, and in service to others.

NIGHT AT THE RACES

The St. Martin of Tours CYO and Men’s Club is hosting their annual "Night at the Races." This supports the children of our parish. For information or to reserve tickets or horses please call Kathy Chmura at 440-232-3096.
