FROM THE PASTOR

Dear penitents,

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the day which begins the season of Lent. We are marked with ashes as a reminder of our sinfulness and mortality. Either of two sets of words may be uttered in giving ashes. The distributor could say, "Remember, you are dust and unto dust you will return." Or the distributor could say, "Turn away from sin (repent) and believe in the Good News (Gospel)." In either case, the spirit of the season encourages us to consider that our lives are finite, that one day each of us will die. When we die we will all have to appear before God to give an accounting of our lives.

The Lenten season helps to refocus us on what is important and what isn’t. We are called to acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, to lives of penance and conversion. In a world without rules, these disciplines and penitential practices are more important than ever. They move us beyond the living out of our Catholic faith solely in our heads. They help us to live out our beliefs from our hearts and in our behavior. I heartily encourage each of you to adopt some form of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for yourself this lent. We do these things to become more like Jesus. Jesus often prayed in the middle of the night. He fasted forty days and nights. He gave away everything he had to give praise to the Father and to serve the needs of the poor. Let his example empower us to get started and to persevere.

Your brother penitant,

Fr. Jamie

THE WORD AMONG US

We have 250 copies of the Lenten issue of The Word Among Us available for parishioners. Take a copy; if you can leave a dollar for the issue that would be great. The Word Among Us is a spiritual, practical, monthly publication with feature articles with daily commentaries on the mass readings. If you read it and take what you read to prayer, you will, indeed, benefit from it.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Each Friday of Lent, for six Fridays, we will conduct the Stations of the Cross in the Church at 7:00 pm. If you are not familiar with this devotion, it is primarily a scriptural walk with Christ, the Way of the Cross-from his condemnation to the burial of his body in the tomb and to his resurrection. All ages are welcome.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING

Any girl or boy, fifth grade on up, who is not currently an altar server, may contact the rectory with your name, school, and phone number. Practices will begin in Lent.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES

We have two masses on Ash Wednesday–9:00 am (with the day school children) and 7:00 pm. Ashes will be distributed during mass. There will be no 7:30 am mass that day. However, there will be a Liturgy of the Word with the distribution of ashes at 12 Noon. Our neighboring parishes have the following schedules: Holy Trinity during masses at 8:00 am and 7:00 pm; St. Pius X during mass at 8:30 am and 5:30 pm; St. Mary at masses at 8:30 am, 12:10 pm, and 7:00 pm; St. Wenceslas during masses as 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are not holy days of obligation; however, they are days of fast and abstinence. This means that all Catholics 14 years of age on up are to abstain from meat and meat byproducts on those days as well as the Fridays of lent. Fasting laws bind Catholics who are 18 through 59 years of age. Those Catholics may have only one main meal during the day, the other two meals not equaling the amount of the main meal. The Church gives these regulations as a minimal guideline and response to the Lord’s call to repent and live out the Gospel.

PRE-CANA DAY

Twenty couples are registered for the St. Martin of Tours Pre-Cana Day being held at the Center for Pastoral Leadership on Saturday, March 8. Our team has been diligently preparing in order to share a lively and spirit-filled day with the engaged couples. The team couples and Fr. Jamie and Deacon Bender relate their experiences about different aspects of Christian marriage. Please pray for both the team and the couples preparing for marriage.

BULLETIN INSERTS BY BISHOP ANTHONY PILLA

ON VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

"I see parish life as so central to our diocesan well being that I would say, ‘as the parish goes, so goes the faith of the people.’"

"My hope is that we will do all that is possible to sustain and enhance the vibrant parish life to which Jesus calls us."

CATHOLIC MENS FELLOWSHIP

The next meeting will take place Saturday morning March 15th. Coffee at 7:30 am in the church lobby, prayer and discussion from 8:00-9:00 am.

This month’s theme will be "Strength through Weakness." We will explore answers to questions, What thorn in the flesh do you think God has given you? Do you see this thorn as a burden or a blessing?

Please note our meeting date is 1 week later than usual due to scheduling conflicts.

HEALING HUMOR

Things to do when bored---

At lunchtime, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars. See if they slow down.

Ask people what sex they are. Laugh hysterically when they answer.

Dont use any punctuation

Every time someone asks you to do something, ask them if they want fries with it.

(from CROSS LINKS by Rev. Herb Yost, CSC, 2002)

When bored, we need to be renewed. Jesus said to put his new wine (his Spirit) into new wine skins (our open hearts). Life can be boring with its repetitiveness; life can also be exhilarating as long as we don’t retreat into our comfortable selves. Rather, let the Holy Spirit breathe into us and stretch us into our best selves possible.

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD!

On Saturday February 22 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist ten people were certified by Bishop Pilla as lay ecclesial ministers for the Diocese of Cleveland. I was privileged to be one of them.

There are so many ways that others have touched my life for the good. But none have touched me more profoundly than you, the people of St. Martin of Tours. Twenty years age you provided me with employment as your parish bookkeeper, and in addition to that you accepted me as a member of your parish family. In all that time you never once failed to show me that I was "one of you." I am especially grateful to all those women and children in this parish who grace my life abundantly by sharing their life and love with me. I have no doubt that the call to Pastoral Ministry came from you, from the love you bear one another, a love that I was privileged to witness time and time again, the same love you have so generously shared with me.

"We are grateful to God who has called us to ecclesial ministry and to all those with whom we have shared and learned. Our call to ministry, confirmed by the Bishop on behalf of the Church, is a call to service. We ask all of you for your ongoing prayers and support." (This was the response to the assembly by those Certified)

Please know that my door is always open!

Comptroller/Pastoral Minister
