How about a gift certificate. She could buy herself something at Kohl’s Penney’s or Kaufman’s–Bath and Body Works or Borders–take herself to eat at Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden or Applebee’s etc. Give her a "Simply Certificate" that is good at a whole list of places. Gift certificates are always the right size and right color! Available after Mass and at the rectory during regular business hours.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear friends,

The day of First Communion brings back a flood of memories for most of us. We remember dressing in a white dress, white shoes, white gloves, white stockings and a white veil; or, we remember wearing a blue suit, white shirt, blue tie, and polished black shoes. We remember where we were in line and who distributed communion to us. We remember parties with all the family present, with delicious foods and a great big cake. We remember receiving lots of presents, including gifts of money. We remember being the ‘star’ of the day. And we have cherished that moment and that day in our memory enhanced through viewing the photos and videos taken way back when. Our First Communion Day was certainly one for the memory book.

It still is. This day, Sunday, May 4, we celebrate group First Communion for twenty-two second-graders of our parish. This is a day for the memory book because we celebrate the Eucharist in memory of Jesus, who gave us his body and blood to eat and to drink. This central truth of our faith is what binds us together as Catholic Christians, uniting us to Jesus himself and to the entire community of baptized persons throughout the world. Through this unity to the Lord, we are to take on his character, his heart and his Spirit whenever we receive the Eucharist. We become more like him. In addition, the reception of Eucharist unites us to humanity, leading us to a lives of service, just as Jesus served the needs of others.

Congratulate these children on their journeys of faith. Encourage them to receive the Eucharist often. Witness to them the powerful effect that regular reception of Communion has in the lives of those who believe. Pray that all of us may become more like Christ inside of ourselves and more like Christ in our actions toward others.

In communion with you,

Fr. Jamie

THE TRAVELING PASTORS

On Sunday May 4, Fr. Jamie has 8:30 am Mass at St. Wenceslas; at 9, Fr. Winkel comes to St. Martin of Tours, Fr. Foster goes to St. Pius X, and Fr. Mahoney travels to St. Mary.

THE SEARCH FOR A NEW PRINCIPAL

Fr. Jamie met with the schoolteachers to gather their input about the new principal. The Search Committee also met, reviewed the ten applications received and scheduled five interviews from among those ten. The interviews began Thursday and will conclude this week. The committee will then make a recommendation based upon those interviews. Our hope is that the new principal will surface clearly through this process.

TED BIZON TO BE ORDAINED AS A DEACON

This Saturday, May 10, Bishop Pilla will ordain eleven men as deacons of the Diocese of Cleveland. One of the men to be ordained is our own Ted Bizon, who will follow in the footsteps of our current deacon John Bender. Ted and his wife Bernadette have completed four long years of study at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in preparation for the Diaconate. Even during this time, Ted has remained active and involved here at St. Martin’s. He and Bernadette run our baptismal program; they are involved in Pre-Cana. Ted is a Eucharistic Minister and he continues to serve as co-chair of our Vibrant Parish Life Committee.

All are welcome to come to the Ordination Mass at St. John’s Cathedral, East 9th Street and Superior Avenue, beginning at 10 am. You are also welcome to come Sunday, May 11, at 11 am, for the first mass at which Ted will minister and preach as deacon. A reception in the school will follow. Please keep Ted and the others to be ordained in your prayers.

BAKERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed to bake for Ted Bizon’s reception, which will be held on Sunday, May 11, sign-up sheets are in the vestibule of the Church.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

The Vibrant Parish Council Committee met with the Parish Pastoral Council this past Monday in order to gather a direction and focus as to what some of the hopes of the VPL are. Taking the words and thoughts from Bishop Pilla’s document and translating them into meaningful goals and values for us here at St. Martin’s and in our community seem to be the greatest challenge that lies before us. Parish Pastoral Council wants to get involved in ways that are helpful to the vitality, spirituality, and community life of our parish.

Parish Council plans to meet jointly with our Parish Finance Council soon to have a clearer picture of our parish’s financial status.

BULLETIN INSERTS BY BISHOP ANTHONY PILLA

ON VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

"My third conviction is that priests, deacons, religious, and lay ecclesial ministers serving the parishes of our Diocese must be respected and that their faithful cooperation is essential.

"Our parish leaders are as prepared, gifted, committed, and generous as any in the Church.

"We need to move quickly in planning for the future in order to honor, encourage and preserve the treasure we have in our parish ministers because these challenges strike them most significantly every day."

HEALING HUMOR

Pastor’s blooper. The priest made this announcement at Mass: "This being Easter Sunday, we will ask Mrs. Johnson to come forward to lay an egg on the altar."

(from HOLY HUMOR, edited by Cal and Rose Samra, 1996)

The egg symbolizes the new life we received through Baptism when we became children of the Resurrection. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord opens our minds and hearts to understand and to live out our lives according to his word.
