PENTECOST SUNDAY WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

All of us have been baptized into one and the same Spirit; let us live then, by the Spirit! That same Spirit, the Advocate, who ‘renews the face of the earth", was given as gift to the disciples to strengthen them to go forth in the name of the Lord and to obtain forgiveness of sins.

GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY LITURGY

Bishop Anthony M. Pilla will honor couples married 50 years in 2003 (married in 1953) with a special Eucharistic Liturgy on Sunday, July 27, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Couples who wish to attend are required to make reservations by June 2. For registration forms or more information call the rectory at 216-475-4300.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

The Apostles didn’t recognize Jesus until they saw his wounds. Don’t look for God’s presence only in the joyful moments of family life. Expect to find God in the evening of the day, when you are exhausted and cranky or when you are most aware of your family’s failures and shortcomings. Today’s gospel reminds us that the wounded Christ is standing among us, urging us to forgive and offering us peace.

WELCOMING THE NEW PRINCIPAL

Mary Mackin, our new day school principal, will be glad to meet with any parents of school students at a social in the school on Sunday, June 15, from 12 Noon until 1 pm.

FROM THE PASTOR

The Diocese asks that this message be repeated one last time:

"Bishop Anthony M. Pilla and his Auxiliary Bishops work with a network of people in the administration of our diocese. One of those departments is the Clergy Personnel Board. Father Lawrence Jurcak was appointed by Bishop Pilla in July 1995 and is the Director of the Board. He works closely with six priests whom the priests of our diocese have elected as their representatives to the Clergy Personnel Board. It is their responsibility to make recommendations to Bishop Pilla regarding the assignment of the diocesan priests in our diocese using the guidelines for the assignment of priests that were approved by the Presbyteral Council in 1991 and periodically reviewed since then.

On Tuesday, June 10, 2003, Father Jurcak and one other member of the Clergy Personnel Board will be here at St. Martin’s. At 7:00 pm on that evening Father Jurcak will facilitate a meeting of the people of our parish in the church building. All members of the Parish Pastoral and Finance Councils, and all Parish Commissions are expected to be present at this meeting. Any interested member of our parish community is welcome, and encouraged, to attend this meeting as well.

The Personnel Board will have questions regarding the character, personality and administrative style of our next pastor. What the Personnel Board does not ask is the "who" question. You are encouraged to give your insights, express your concerns, and listen to the observations of other parishioners. Your input is needed so that the Personnel Board can give Bishop Pilla, who makes the ultimate decision of who will become our new pastor, the best possible advice."

In the meantime, please keep the parish, the diocese, and me in your prayers.

Sincerely,

Fr. Jamie

THE PARISH PICNIC

Valley View Woods has been reserved on Sunday, August 17, for our annual parish picnic. Anyone interested in helping to plan the picnic is welcome to attend a meeting in the school on Monday, June 23, at 7 pm. Contact Valerie at the rectory if you are interested but cannot be present for the meeting.

FAREWELL TO MRS. ROZANN SWANSON

Thanks to all who helped to put on the parish farewell last Sunday for Mrs. Rozann Swanson, our school principal. It was a fond farewell and quite a celebration.

VIBRANT PARISH TOWN HALL MEETING

About 55 people gathered this past Sunday evening for two hours in the church to share stories and to envision how those stories can be updated and brought to life in St. Martin’s today. It was an evening that lifted up many hearts. How blessed we are to have so many people in our parish who want only the best for the parish and each of its members.

If you were unable to make the Town Hall meeting and still would like to contribute forms are available in the vestibule of the church. Please take one and return it next week.

ANNUAL MISSION APPEAL

Fr. John Dailey, a missionary in the Diocese of Chalatenango, El Salvador, is here this weekend to speak to us for the annual Mission Appeal.

Fr. Dailey is a priest of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, who has served most of his life in Central America. Your generosity towards the Diocesan Mission Appeal Collection to be taken up at mass will benefit immensely the people of Chalatenango.

BULLETIN INSERTS BY BISHOP ANTHONY PILLA

ON VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

"As a first step, I ask that each parish, using the resources to be developed, assess its vitality and vibrancy.

"Discover and proclaim what most gives life in your parish. Identify your best resources and your greatest examples of vibrancy. Discern those areas where you hope to enhance parish vitality."

WORSHIP COMMISSION

Are you interested in the rites and rituals we celebrate as church? Have you ever wondered how the liturgy has developed through scripture and tradition? Are you interested in more vibrant liturgical celebrations? Could you help decorate the worship space? If you answered yes, or even maybe to any of these questions consider joining the parish Worship Commission. Anyone interested should contact Deacon Ted at 663-1262 to talk about your interest. A Worship Commission will be forming in June.

PARISH OPPORTUNITIES

During the Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, which our parish celebrated just a few short weeks ago, the second reading was from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. In part, it read:

"There are different gifts but the same spirit;

There are different ministries but the same Lord;

…To each person the manifestation of Spirit is given for the common good."

This reading is especially relevant as we begin the process of filling teaching positions and other positions within the Parish School of Religion. Over the last several months, many of our seasoned teachers have "retired" leaving the Pre-Kindergarten, and grades 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 without instructors for the 2003 – 04 school year. I invite PSR parents and other adult parishioners to reflect upon Paul’s message. Please consider what your gifts are and how you might use them to help in the religious formation of our young children. Surely your gifts are wonderful in the sight of the Lord! Perhaps the Holy Spirit is calling you to fill a void in our program. Call me at the Religious Education Office (216) 475-3455 for information.
