MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST SUNDAY WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

Moses ratifies the covenant by offering a thanksgiving sacrifice and by sprinkling blood over the people. The new covenant, the law’s oblation, is ratified in the blood of Christ, the unblemished offering poured out for us.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Today’s Feast is the Body and Blood of Christ, formerly called ‘Corpus Christi’ Sunday. How privileged we are as Catholics to have the Blessed Sacrament, the living sign Jesus gives us as food for our journey through life! Yet, this privilege has fallen into unbelief and complacency in our times. Many of us can remember times, some years ago, of much greater respect for and belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and, consequently, respect for life, as well. Much of that has vanished over the past thirty-five years. Statistics are appalling when they tell us that weekly church attendance has fallen to thirty per cent of those professing to be Catholics and that half of those who are Catholics do not even believe that Jesus is truly present in Holy Eucharist.

The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has addressed these topics again and again in various ways. He has communicated extensively through the spoken and written word the constant teaching of the church about the Eucharist. He has produced the new Catechism of the Catholic Church and given us the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. His life has been a faithful witness to the power of the Eucharist. Now, he is promulgating some changes in the Liturgy in order to restore that reverence and respect for the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist. You will be hearing more about these changes in the weeks to come.

We are blessed to have the opportunity to receive Holy Communion every day of the week. We have regularly scheduled masses six days of the week, with a communion service on Tuesdays.

We also have the opportunity to pray before the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel every day, any time of the day.

Faithful reception of the Eucharist enables us to live out fully the two greatest commandments. We give praise and glory to God and we show our love for our neighbors in our works of compassion.

May this Feast enkindle in our hearts a deeper desire to be a Eucharistic people.

Your brother in Christ,

Fr. Jamie

PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL

Thirteen years ago, St. Martin of Tours instituted a perpetual adoration chapel in which people could come for holy hours in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord. People enrolled for holy hours at any and every hour of the day of every week throughout the year. Because of God’s good grace and the faithfulness of many during these years, our Adoration Chapel continues to flourish. We are always in need of new folks to come to spend one hour with Jesus. Now is the time to respond to the Lord’s call to deepen your relationship with him. Come to the Adoration Chapel. Make a sacrifice of an hour, morning, noon or night. Let us re-consecrate ourselves and our parish to follow Jesus more closely through the gift of Eucharist.

PARISH PICNIC MEETING

Anyone interested in helping to plan the parish picnic is welcome to attend a meeting in the school on Monday, June 23, at 7 pm. The picnic is set for Sunday, August 17, at Valley View Woods. Contact Valerie at the rectory if you are interested but cannot be present for the meeting.

BEDFORD HUNGER CENTER

The Bedford Hunger Center at South Haven Church on Northfield Road, Bedford, next to Bedford High School, needs healthy men to load and unload food on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you can give a helping hand, please contact Bill Scott at (216) 518-1850. He is manager of the Hunger Center, which is sponsored by the Southeast Clergy Council, of which St. Martin is a member.

BULLETIN INSERTS BY BISHOP ANTHONY PILLA

ON VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

"We must love the Church and help our people to participate fully in its life. Our discernment and dialogue need to be rooted in love—the love of God, love for each other, love for the Church. We must recognize and embrace the unifying power the Church has for all of us. I look forward to continuing our conversations within the Church as we discern the path to which the Spirit calls us."

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Today’s gospel talks about the last supper of Jesus. Notice that this meal, like all the other meals in Jesus’ life, to growing up in Nazareth, started with a blessing. When we eat as a family, it is important to start with a prayer. Praying reminds us that we sit at a table to do more than eat. We gather to share our lives and strengthen the bond that calls us to live our lives for one another.

FLAG DISPOSAL

Last Saturday, Flag Day, the Scouts conducted a ceremony for the disposal of worn out flags in the circle in front of the church. Over 400 flags were consumed in the flames. Thank you, Scouts, for your example of patriotism.

THE HARVEST IS GREAT,

BUT THE LABORERS FEW…

"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

Our parish needs laborers to cultivate and nurture the young children in our Parish School of Religion. The need for PSR teachers, aides, and other volunteers is great. If you are a person of faith, a person willing to share your faith and help pass on its rich traditions to the youngest of our community, please call Diana McCormick at 216-475-3455.

HEALING HUMOR

Dealer of pre-owned (used) car: "I can let you have this car, complete with air conditioning, full power, and stereo radio with CD player for $8,777.00."

Father of two teenagers: "Take our the radio and CD player and I’ll give you nine thousand."

(from KEEP ‘EM LAUGHIN’, 1987)

Take the Eucharist out of our worship and what have you got? A service of the Word. We are a people of Word and Sacrament. The ‘Word’, who is Jesus, became flesh for us. He truly gave us his body and blood as a perpetual help in this life, as food for our journey through the time he has allotted for us. How blessed we are as Catholics to have the sacrament of Holy Communion, His Real Presence, and his presence in the Word of God to nourish us.
