FROM THE PASTOR
Dear friends,
Parish activities start to pick up with the beginning of
August. The school is being readied for
another school year. Painting,
fixing-up, polishing and cleaning are all taking place and will be completed to
ensure a smooth beginning for all the events and meeting that take place in the
school.
The new, men’s prayer group will begin on Saturday morning,
August 11. This looks like a great opportunity for men to gather for fellowship
and prayer. What was missed this summer was the opportunity to have a Vacation
Bible School for our younger ones. We
hope to have it back next summer. Bible
Study will return this fall. Pre-Cana
is on the calendar for March 8, 2003.
Some have called these early days in August the “dog days of
summer.” It’s during these dog days
that much planning is underway to renew the church, the priesthood, and our
parish. One difficulty has been how to
work toward the vibrant parishes the Bishop calls us to be in the midst of the
clergy scandal. You can be assured that
this will be a topic of meeting that the Bishop is holding with all of the
priests of the diocese during the latter part of summer. On July 29, Bishop Pilla began a series of
listening sessions at various sites on the subject of sexual abuse of minors
and the response of the church by its leaders.
Please keep Fr. Matt and me in your prayers as we participate in the process,
which will conclude in a day of reflection on September 23 of this year.
May God bless you during these “dog days.”
In Christ,
Fr. Jamie
THE SPAGHETTI
DINNER
St. Pius X Parish has given us permission again to hold our
annual Spaghetti Dinner there on Sunday, November 24. It would be great to add to the wonderful afternoon we had there
last year.
RCIA
If you are interested in becoming Catholic, the RCIA (rite of
Christian Initiation for Adults) process is for you. If you know of someone--spouse, fiancé, relative, friend—who
might be ready to become Catholic, contact Fr. Jamie or Fr. Matt at the
rectory. This includes persons who are
never baptized, baptized Christian but not Catholic, baptized Catholic but not
communicated or confirmed. If you fit
in any of these categories, or would like to be part of the RCIA Team give a
call and we’ll answer your questions.
The process will begin in September on Monday nights.

THE
NATIONAL SHRINE CHAPEL PRAYERS
Here is the sixth set of prayers from the Basilica
of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.,
prayers petitioning the Blessed Virgin Mother for her intercession. You may want to cut these out or copy these
prayers for your personal use.
OUR LADY,
QUEEN OF IRELAND
Holy Mary, if thou wilt, hear Thy suppliant;
I put myself under the shelter of Thy shield.
When falling in the slippery path, Thou art
my smooth supporting hand staff.
There is no hound in fleetness or in chase,
north wind or rapid river, as quick as
the Mother of Christ to the bed of death,
to those who are entitled to her kindly
protection. Amen.
OUR LADY OF
SILUVA
O most Holy Virgin, you who have appeared to
the shepherds in the fields at Siluva, you whose
tears bathed the rock where once an altar stood,
you who with plaintive voice said: “You plow and
seed here where formerly my Son was honored,”
grant that we, moved by your tears, may once,
as our forefathers did, revive the spirit of
adoration
of your Son in our fallow hearts, strengthen the
tottering structure of the shrine which is the
family,
and seek forgiveness for the negligence and sins of
our nation.
O Mother of God, we desire to raise up the glory of
your revelation from forgotten ruins, that we may
all the
more honor you the patroness of our country, and,
with
your help, obtain for our nation the spirit of
living Faith.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
OUR LADY OF
FATIMA
Most Holy Virgin, who hast deigned to come to
Fatima to reveal the treasures of graces hidden in
the recitation of the Rosary, inspire our hearts
with
a sincere love of this devotion, that meditating on
the Mysteries of our Redemption recalled therein,
we may obtain the conversion of sinners, the
conversion
of Russia, and the favors we ask you now for the
greater
glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good
of souls. Amen.

MARTIN’S
MEN’S FELLOWSHIP
All Men of the parish are invited to attend the
inaugural meeting of the Men’s Fellowship Group.
Saturday, August 10, coffee and donuts at 7:30 am in
the church lobby, meeting will take place at the side Altar from 8:00 am to
9:00 am.
This month’s theme; “Authentic Christian Men” We will
explore answers to questions such as:
What might
Jesus say are the characteristics of a real
Man;
What are some of the influences in society
that cause men
to lose
touch with the sense that they are created in
his
image;
Where do you
look for happiness and fulfillment, and
where
do you find them.

HEALING HUMOR
One pastor of a Cleveland parish
had little success in persuading his parishioners to come up to the front pews
of the church for mass. He put this
tactful hint in his parish Bulletin: “Some people refuse to come up to the
front of church unless escorted by pallbearers.”
(from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL.
8, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1990)
We can be reluctant to let go of
our comfort zone. But, if we do, we see
what Jesus can do with what we have to give.
He can take five loaves and two fish and feed a multitude. He will multiply his miraculous works
through us as our faith in him leads us to open our hearts and lives to him.

WORLD
YOUTH DAY
O thank you Canada for World Youth Day 2002! It was an awesome experience in so many ways
for our 10 parish pilgrims. Our eyes
welled up with tears on more than one occasion for more than one reason. It was deeply moving to see Pope John Paul
II up close, such a strong and hope filled witness to the Gospel of Life in
Jesus Christ. We faithfully prayed for
the intentions of our hearts and those from our parish at the Masses, the
candle light vigil, the Stations of the Cross.
The hundreds of thousands of people from over 170 of the world’s
countries getting along so well was also moving. Toronto was transformed into a city of joy with youths singing,
dancing in the subways, praying fervently with hundreds of thousands in a Sea
of love, meeting new friends in solidarity from all over the world. What we witnessed in Toronto is hard to put
into words; it was a vision of the future and a vision of heaven, of expectant
faith and miracles, of people giving glory to God in the company of Jesus, the
Pope and one another. With the graces
also came the tears of sorrow and physical hardship that our pilgrimage
brought. Eating gross mush for food,
walking dozens of miles a day, lack of showers, scarce porta-potties, lack of
water, large crowds, long lines, blazing heat, driving rain, broken bodies and
heat stroke. We hope we have cleared
out purgatory. Thank you for all your
prayers and support on our pilgrimage to be “Salt for the earth…Light for the
world” MT 5:13-16.
In Christ our Light, Fr. Matt and the St. Martin
pilgrims.
