FROM THE PASTOR

Dear friends,

As an insert today, I enclose a letter from Bishop Pilla, which he wants to be made available to all parishioners at mass this weekend.  The letter addresses the use of our Catholic Charities donations.  The question has been raised this week about whether or not Catholic Charities money is used or will be used to pay settlements in sexual abuse cases.  This the Bishop’s response.

It must be awful hard being the Bishop these days; it’s hard enough being a priest.  I agree with the Bishop that the trust level in the leadership of the church will return as our leaders prove to be trustworthy.  Instead of that trust being given automatically because of one’s position of authority in the church (the way things used to be), it seems now that it has to be earned.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  In the long run, it could be good.  Since the church in the United States has become so much like the culture, perhaps the sexual abuse scandal will spur us on to a different way of being and living, one that sets apart both clergy and laity alike, for being followers of Jesus Christ.

That’s where hope shines through all this mess.  I have to remind myself constantly that our Lord suffered, took upon himself the Cross and died for our sakes before he rose from the dead.  He said that his followers would have to deny themselves, take up the cross daily and follow in his footsteps.  If Jesus, who did not sin and perfectly carried out the will of the Father, suffered and died, how much more do we who are sinners deserve to be punished for our sinfulness, let alone bear crosses because we want to follow the Lord?  Sometimes I feel embarrassed about wearing the ‘collar’ because of the scandal.  But, I know that St. Paul says that there is a greater scandal—the cross.  It is in the cross of Jesus Christ that we find our hope.  That’s where we need to turn, that’s where I need to turn to find meaning and purpose in life.

Then, let us turn and return to the Lord of all hopefulness with all our problems.  Let us do that together, as church and as parish.  As we turn to him, to Jesus Christ crucified, his Spirit will restore our faith and help us to rebuild our parish and the Church of Cleveland.

In Christ,

Fr. Jamie

THE NATIONAL SHRINE CHAPEL PRAYERS

Here is the seventh and last set of prayers from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., prayers petitioning the Blessed Virgin Mother for her intercession.  You may want to cut these out or copy these prayers for your personal use.

MARY, MOTHER OF MANKIND

Mother, I commend and entrust to you all that goes to

make up earthly progress, asking that it should not be

one-sided, but that it should create conditions for the

full spiritual advancement of individuals, families,

communities and nations.   I comment to you the unborn,

the poor, the suffering, the sick and the handicapped, the

aging and the dying.  I ask you to reconcile those in sin,

to heal those in pain, and to uplift those who have lost

their hope and joy.  Show to those who struggle in doubt

the light of Christ your Son.  Amen.

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

O most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine,

splendor of heaven.  Blessed Mother of the Son of God,

Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity…

O, star of the sea, help me and show me herein you are my

mother.

O holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth,

I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart,

to succor me in this necessity; there are none that can

withstand your power.

O show me herein you are my Mother.  O Mary, conceived

without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times).

Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (three times).

MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke

your most powerful name, which is the safeguard of living

and the salvation of the dying.

O purest Mary, O Sweetest Mary, let your name henceforth

be ever on my lips.  Delay not, O Blessed Lady, to help me

whenever I call on you, for, in all my needs, in all my

temptations, I shall never cease to call on you, ever repeating

your sacred name, Mary, Mary.  O what consolation, what

sweetness, what confidence, what emotion fill my soul when

I pronounce your sacred name, or even only think of you.

I thank God for having given you, for my good, so sweet,

so powerful, so lovely a name.  But I will not be content

with merely pronouncing your name, let my love for you

prompt me ever to hail you, Mother of Perpetual Help.. Amen.

HEALING HUMOR

Mother to teenage daughter going to a party: “Have a good time.”

Teenage daughter shouting back: “Don’t tell me what to do!”

(from POINTS WITH PUNCH by Dennis R. Fakes, 1982)

When Jesus tells us what to do, not only do we need to listen, we need to respond obediently.  He told Peter to come to him, over the wind and the waves, and Peter was able to walk on the water as long as he focused on the Lord’s invitation to “come.”  The Lord will sustain us in all our difficulties, through all life’s storms, if we but come to him and obey his words.

Thought for the Day

“It isn’t necessary to blow out the other person’s light to let your own light shine.”

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Sometimes it isn’t the troubles we face that make life hard; it’s our doubt that weakens our resolve. The gospel today recounts how Jesus calmed fears and encouraged his followers. We can trust in the calming presence of Christ in our family life. Our families can be like Christ when we encourage those facing trouble.
