20th Sun. in Ordinary Time 8/18/02 Scripture Reading:

All peoples are invited to worship in the Lord and to know his ways. God’s gifts and his call are to Jew and Gentile alike. Jesus comes to recognize the universality of God’s call in granting the request of the Cananite woman.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear friends,

Again this week we deal with the issue of the sexual abuse scandal in the Church. The Special Commission, chaired by William Denihan, has finished its draft toward making a new Diocesan Policy.  It is too costly and too cumbersome to make enough copies for everyone of the thirty sides of printed material, which make up the document.  Information below lists how you can get hold of a copy to read this material.  What is important is that you do read it and make your response heard so that the Diocese can hammer out the best policy possible for the good of our children, of our families, and of the Church.

It’s tiresome to be dealing with this over and over again.  That seems to be a cumulative result of what has happened through years of overlooking how serious abuse of a minor is and of how deeply and lastingly hurt many of the victims have become.

Through it all Church goes on.  For through every Calvary there comes an Easter Sunday.  Just three days ago we celebrated the ‘Feast.’  We treasured the holiness and faith filled response of Mary to grace.  In contrast to all those sins and crimes against others (especially the young) we can look to Mary as our model of purity in word and action and as the paragon of living each day full of grace.  When we think of the horror things done to little ones, we see how low we can sink as humans.  When we reflect upon Mary, we see our Mother and Sister raised up in holiness and we can glimpse that God wants to raise us up to be like Mary. May our faith lead and encourage each of us to desire to be a saint, to be like Mary.

In Christ,

Fr. Jamie

MEN’S PRAYER GROUP

Fourteen men came to the church for an hour of prayer and fellowship this past Saturday.  Rich Bacha very capably facilitated the gathering, which began with coffee at 7:30 am; the prayer portion lasted from 8:00 to 9:00 am.  Actually, we finished a few minutes before nine. The next meeting will be Saturday, September 14.  All men of the parish are welcome.

HAPPPY ANNIVERSARY

Best wishes to Ron and Mary Roch who will celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary on August 18.

THE SPECIAL COMMISSION ON SEXUAL ABUSE

The Special Commision on Sexual Abuse in the Diocese of Cleveland has completed its proposed draft document.  They ask three things.  First that copies be made available to parishioners and parents of school children.  Copies of the report are available by request at the parish office, on the Internet at www.specialcommission.org and also on a link from www.diocese of cleveland.org, and in the vestibule of the church for your reading.  Second, the Commission asks that parishioners have ways to respond to the draft.  Response forms are available at the rectory office, in the vestibule of the church or on the internet.  See the form itself for more detailed information. The response form lists several ways to return the form.  Deadline for comments is August 26, 2002.  Thirdly, we are to send people to a meeting of parish representative for our district.  Our Suburban Southeast District will meet along with the Suburban East District on Thursday, September 5, at 7:30 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Parish at 6850 Mayfield Road in Gates Mills.  If you feel you need to be in the group going from here, contact the parish office.  If you have any questions for the Commission itself, please call (216) 281-8717.

ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY

The Church year is divided into various liturgical seasons.  Ordinary Time makes up 33 or 34 Sundays out of every year, or about 60% of the calendar.  You can tell Ordinary Time because the vestments are green.

What’s extraordinary?  We might call the other Church seasons “Extra-Ordinary”—Advent, Christmas,  Lent, Easter.  The stories of Jesus during these times have special significance.   We celebrate his birth, life, death and resurrection.  The rest of the time is numbered (ordinal), or Ordinary.  But, Ordinary time is anything but ordinary!  Through the year, most of our daily existence—tending to the basic necessities of food, clothing, and shelter, all requiring the ordinary reality of works—seems very ordinary.  But is it?

Divine power in our daily lives.  Jesus uses ordinary human experiences in his parables to direct our attention to the kingdom of heaven: farmers sowing seeds, people baking bread, young lads walking along with fish and bread.  Jesus can take what is right in front of us and transform it into an image of the reign of God.   Should we not then do the same, and see the divine potency in our ordinary lives?  (Next time we will look at St. Benedict who was able to see God’s presence in every day life.)

HEALING HUMOR

Mrs. Allen was having a tough time getting the catsup to flow from a bottle.  While she pounded the bottle the doorbell rang.

“See who is there,” she shouted to Jimmy, who ran to open the door. There was Father Murphy, to see about some parish business.

“Where’s your mom?” he asked.

Brightly Jimmy replied: “She’s out in the kitchen, hitting the bottle.”

(from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL. 1, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1983)

We might be tempted to ‘hit the bottle’ if we felt it to be true that Jesus played favorites and did not care about us or our problems.  However, not only did the Lord of Life come for the ‘lost sheep of the house of Israel’, he came to love, comfort, forgive, heal, and save us all.  The entirety of humankind makes up the family of the God who is with us, the God who loves us.

NEW PARISH EMAIL AND WEB SITE

The use of computers and the internet has become almost commonplace in today’s world and Church.  Recent statistics show that 90% of internet users are Christians.  In an effort to increase our responsible use of the miracle of modern communication we are announcing our new parish email address: “stmartin@usa.com” .  Our parish website can be reached in several ways the easiest of which is to type the following into your web browser and click “go”: www.geocities.com/saintmartinoftours .  Then click on the picture of our Church and bookmark the actual site for future reference.  The school email is “stmartintours@leeca.org”.  We are in need of volunteers skilled in the use of computers, websites or the Internet to help us maintain and develop our parish’s use of the web.  Please contact Fr. Matt 475-4300 or email stmartin@usa.com if you have some extra time or feel called to help.  We have an immediate need for someone to help upload the bulletin each week.  It could be emailed to you and we could train you on how to do this from home.

Also we have a new fundraising link on our parish website titled “shop to support Saint Martin of Tours.”  When you make any purchases over the web, please click through this link first and then our parish will receive up to 10% of all your Internet purchases for free!  Its just like the certificate program in that the stores donate funds to us just for directing our parishioners to shop through the link on our parish website.

THE HUNGER CENTER NEEDS YOU

St. Martin’s assists at the Hunger Center at South Haven Church on Northfield Road in Bedford (next to Bedford High School.) The Hunger Center needs a second representative from our parish to help serve the needs of the hungry by attending the next meeting of people made up of members of churches in the Southeast Clergy Council. That meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 3, at South Haven Church. If you would like to attend on behalf of our parish, please call the rectory.

PLEASE HELP US KEEP “UP TO DATE”

If you’ve recently had a child, and the baptism took place at another parish; please let us know so we can update our files.

If a child has moved out of your home, and is living on their own, please let us know.

If you are a young adult, supporting yourself, living on your own or with your parents, you should be independently registered at our parish.

If your son or daughter has gotten married, at a parish other than St. Martin’s, please let us know so we can make the appropriate notation in our records.

If you have changed your address or phone number, please let us know so we can have the correct information on file.
