21st Sunday Ordinary Time 8/25/02 – Scripture reflection:

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear folks,

As the school year kicks in again at all levels, we are reminded that the greatest treasure we possess is our children.  We need to do all we can to help our children safely and assuredly grow in the ways of faith and prepare them to deal with the ways of the world.  We are blessed at Saint Martin’s to have one of the finest Catholic elementary schools around.  Not only are the girls and boys given a great academic preparation for high school, they are taught and experience the fundamentals of our faith in both word and in deed.  We have a fine, committed staff in the school, spearheaded by our principal Rozanne Swanson.  You must know how difficult it is these days to form children properly and to form them in the ways of the Lord.  The effects of the clergy abuse of minors has touched all of us.  It is now more difficult to encourage parent and children to trust us priests.  It is more difficult for us priests to remind us of God’s call to each of us to be holy, to live out our faith, to come to worship regularly, and to support the church (and parish) with our time, talents and treasures.

Despite all the negatives, we know that God has not abandoned us, nor should we abandon the Lord or our faith.  Though we are sinners, and grievous wrongs and crimes have taken place, ‘Church’ goes on.  Our children, our young adults, our adults, our seniors—we are all too important to simply feel sorry for ourselves and do nothing.   As long as we keep Christ at the center of our lives and at the center of our work, he will provide the right direction for every circumstance.

With great hope for healing, renewal and vibrancy for ourselves and for our parish, we begin this school year by cherishing our children.

In Christ,

Fr. Jamie

THE SPECIAL COMMISSION ON SEXUAL ABUSE

The Special Commision on Sexual Abuse in the Diocese of Cleveland has completed its proposed draft document.  They ask three things.  First that copies be made available to parishioners and parents of school children.  Copies of the report are available by request at the parish office, on the Internet at www.specialcommission.org and also on a link from www.diocese of cleveland.org, and in the vestibule of the church for your reading.  Second, the Commission asks that parishioners have ways to respond to the draft.  Response forms are available at the rectory office, in the vestibule of the church or on the internet.  See the form itself for more detailed information. The response form lists several ways to return the form.  Deadline for comments is August 26, 2002.  Thirdly, we are to send people to a meeting of parish representative for our district.  Our Suburban Southeast District will meet along with the Suburban East District on Thursday, September 5, at 7:30 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Parish at 6850 Mayfield Road in Gates Mills.  If you feel you need to be in the group going from here, contact the parish office.  If you have any questions for the Commission itself, please call (216) 281-8717.

ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY (cont.)

The Church year is divided into various liturgical seasons.  Ordinary Time makes up 33 or 34 Sundays out of every year, or about 60% of the calendar, just as ordinary events make up most of what we do day to day.  However, God is truly present in our daily lives.

St. Benedict was able to see God’s presence in every day life. Benedict (480-547 A.D.) grew in his faith by imitating the famous desert hermits.  Disciples came out to see and be taught by him.  His instructions are summed up in the spiritual classic, The Rule of St. Benedict.  He taught humility, silence, and the importance of Scripture.

One part of The Rule is devoted to the “cellarer” of the monastery, a title we might call today the business manager, or someone who oversees the material goods of the monastery.  That person was to “regard all utensils and goods of the monastery as sacred vessels of the altar, aware that nothing is to be neglected.”  Benedict taught that “the divine presence is everywhere.”  If that is so, God is present in public and private prayers, but also in the midst of our ordinary daily lives.  For us, then, nothing is too exempt or too mundane to reveal God’s presence, including ringing a bell, driving a car, using the telephone, or washing vegetables.  St. Benedict would advise us that it is in these ordinary, every day actions that God is truly present, for God has consecrated all creation unto himself.

HEALING HUMOR

In honor of many of our children returning to school this week, we present the following.

TEACHER: Are you late to school again?

WENDELL: Yes, Ms. Jones, but didn’t you tell us it’s never too late to learn?

(from 696 SILLY SCHOOL JOKES & RIDDLES by Joseph Rosenbloom, 1986)

One thing that it is never too late to learn is that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of the living God.  As we fully learn that truth—convicted in our body, mind, heart and soul--our lives are never the same.  We will experience the joy of Jesus, and the cross besides, leading us to give God glory and moving us towards deeper communion with our neighbor.

You can join the Sunday Choir, the Contemporary Guitar Ensemble, the Funeral Choir, the Hand bell Choir, or you can be a cantor. Perhaps you want to form a group of your own such as a Youth Choir or a Praise and Worship Team. The possibilities for your involvement are endless. NEW PARISH EMAIL AND WEB SITE

The use of computers and the internet has become almost commonplace in today’s world and Church.  Recent statistics show that 90% of internet users are Christians.  In an effort to increase our responsible use of the miracle of modern communication we are announcing our new parish email address: “stmartin@usa.com” .  Our parish website can be reached in several ways the easiest of which is to type the following into your web browser and click “go”: www.geocities.com/saintmartinoftours .  Then click on the picture of our Church and bookmark the actual site for future reference.  The school email is “stmartintours@leeca.org”.  We are in need of volunteers skilled in the use of computers, websites or the Internet to help us maintain and develop our parish’s use of the web.  Please contact Fr. Matt 475-4300 or email stmartin@usa.com if you have some extra time or feel called to help.  We have an immediate need for someone to help upload the bulletin each week.  It could be emailed to you and we could train you on how to do this from home.

Also we have a new fundraising link on our parish website titled “shop to support Saint Martin of Tours.”  When you make any purchases over the web, please click through this link first and then our parish will receive up to 10% of all your Internet purchases for free!  Its just like the certificate program in that the stores donate funds to us just for directing our parishioners to shop through the link on our parish website.

THE HUNGER CENTER NEEDS YOU

St. Martin’s assists at the Hunger Center at South Haven Church on Northfield Road in Bedford (next to Bedford High School.) The Hunger Center needs a second representative from our parish to help serve the needs of the hungry by attending the next meeting of people made up of members of churches in the Southeast Clergy Council. That meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 3, at South Haven Church. If you would like to attend on behalf of our parish, please call the rectory.

PLEASE HELP US KEEP “UP TO DATE”

If you’ve recently had a child, and the baptism took place at another parish; please let us know so we can update our files.

If a child has moved out of your home, and is living on their own, please let us know.

If you are a young adult, supporting yourself, living on your own or with your parents, you should be independently registered at our parish.

If your son or daughter has gotten married, at a parish other than St. Martin’s, please let us know so we can make the appropriate notation in our records.

If you have changed your address or phone number, please let us know so we can have the correct information on file.
