22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 9/1/02 Scripture:

Following the Lord means nothing less than the cross: offering ourselves with Jesus as a living sacrifice and not conforming ourselves to this world. Following him will entail derision and scorn, yet the Lord is our help.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear friends,

September brings with it thoughts of new beginnings, of the marvels accomplished on this planet by human labor, vibrant parish life, the start of the school year, football games and the World Series, Indian summer, the changing of the seasons, possibilities and opportunities.  God’s presence and blessings make this an invigorating time.  Simultaneously, it is also the time when we will remember 9/11/01 and the terrible tragedy of terrorism at the World Trade Center, time during which our favorite teams may not necessarily win all their games, time for us to deal with the difficulties of abuse in the church and challenges in our parish and community.  It is a good time, a holy time, a time that encourages us to celebrate life in its diversity and wonder.

In Christ,

Fr. Jamie

MASS FOR LABOR DAY, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Mass will begin at 9:00 am on Labor Day.  We are truly blessed that we can work in order to earn a decent living, far greater than that of  most of the other people in the world.  It is good to come to worship to thank God for the many blessings we receive by living in the USA and receiving the fruits of our labors.

PARISH MASS AND HOLY HOUR ON SEPTEMBER 11

Fr. Matt will celebrate Mass at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 11th, to be followed by a Holy Hour.

Please come to pray for our country, for an end to terrorism, and for world peace.

THE SPECIAL COMMISSION ON SEXUAL ABUSE

The Special Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Diocese of Cleveland has completed the draft of the document. Bishop Pilla wants feedback from the people of our diocese about the proposed policy. Our Suburban Southeast District will meet along with the Suburban East District on Thursday, September 5, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish at 6850 Mayfield Road in Gates Mills.  This will be a great opportunity to share your thoughts.  There are several of us from the parish going to this meeting.   Contact the office if you want to attend.  If you have any questions for the Commission itself, please call (216) 2811-8717.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The larger Stations of the Cross have arrived from Belgium and were installed on Tuesday. The smaller lindenwood Stations have been returned.  We will have a blessing of the Stations at Mass.

NEW FAMILIES GATHER IN SCHOOL

The school looked great— brightly cleaned, painted, and polished—as a host of new families gathered in school to be welcomed after the 10:00 am mass last Sunday.  The folks got to see the classrooms and gather for a brief orientation talk as well as taking some time for socializing and snacking.  Thanks to Mary Maher, Kathy Dombrosky, Ed Spychola, and all those who helped get the school ready for this occasion.

BUILDING A GODLY DATABASE

We cannot trust the media to give us the truth about life and about our faith.  We need to build into our everyday thinking the truths from the Bible, which will help us to resist the lies and temptations of the devil.  Use the following list as a springboard for building your own personal database of truths you take with you every day.

GOD LOVES ME. (Romans 8:38-9, 1 John 4:10)  God loves us first and nothing can separate us from his love.

GOD HAS A PERFECT PLAN FOR ME. (Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 139:16) God’s plan gives us hope and a future.

JESUS HAS FORGIVEN ALL SIN. (Mark 10:45, 1 John 2:1-2) Jesus is our advocate and gives his life as ransom for us.

I AM A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST. (Romans 6:4, 2 Corinthians 5:17) Being baptized into Christ makes us new creations.

JESUS HAS DEFEATED THE DEVIL.  (John 12:31-32, Colossians 1:13-14) Jesus has driven out the ruler of this world, rescuing us, giving us redemption and the forgiveness of sins.

THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN ME.  (Luke 11:13, Romans 8:15-16) Through the Spirit we become God’s children, able to call God “Abba”, meaning “Daddy!”

I CAN OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD.  (Matthew 5:14-16, Ephesians 5:8-11)  We are the salt of the earth and light of the world.  Let that light shine.

To know the will of God

is the greatest knowledge,

to find the will of God

is the greatest discovery,

and to do the will of God

is the greatest achievement

HEALING HUMOR

A fellow quit going fishing on Sundays and began going to church.  The priest, grateful to see him, said, “Henry, it makes me feel good to see you and your wife here every Sunday.”

“Well,” said the fisherman, “I figured I’d rather hear your sermon than hers.”

(from MORE HOLY HUMOR by Cal and Rose Samra, 1997)

Most of us would rather not hear these words of Jesus spoken in today’s gospel.  We recognize in our labors at work, at home, and at school call us to make sacrifices, some big and some not so big,  in order to take care of the material needs of our loved ones.  That’s just one example of how the Lord calls us to embrace his way.   That way to the greatest fulfillment in life here and in the hereafter involves self denial, taking up our cross daily, and following in the footsteps of Jesus.

MEN’S CATHOLIC FELLOWSHIP MEEETING

The next meeting will take place Saturday morning September 14. Coffee and a light breakfast at 7:30 am, prayer and discussion from 8:00-9:00am.

This month’s theme will be “The Measure of a Man, Forgiveness”. Bible test will refer to Matthew 5:23-34, 18-15-17,21-35.

We are an expanding group of parish men who desire to grow spiritually and develop friendships with those having similar desires. Open to all Men of the parish, no cost.

Thanks to all those who participated in making the August kick-off meeting such a great experience. Your enthusiasm and strong singing voices were a real inspiration.

ATTENTION EVERYONE

Music is an integral part of our worship and has the power to better focus our mind, body, and soul on the Lord’s presence. If you enjoy praising God through music why not consider becoming a member of our music ministry team either by lending your voice or playing an instrument?! You can join the Sunday Choir, the Contemporary Guitar Ensemble, the Funeral Choir, the Hand bell Choir, or you can be a cantor. Perhaps you want to form a group of your own such as a Youth Choir or a Praise and Worship Team. The possibilities for your involvement are endless. If you have any questions or would like to be a part of the music ministry team please contact Jason Falkofsky at 216-475-4300 ext. 14.
