A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Listening! It sounds so easy, but it can be difficult. Our reaction might be to advise, correct or direct. That isn’t Listening! Listening cements relationships, develops trust, conveys love and understanding. It also allows us to discover God’s presence in the encounter, for Christ tells us, "Wherever two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst."

ST. MARTIN OF TOURS ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE

A reminder to the 51 pilgrims: be in the church parking lot between 6:30 and 6:45 am, on September 11, 2002. Please park way in the back. Return time will be 7:30 pm.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear SMT parishioners,

Our focus this week will be on the activities taking place on Wednesday, September 11, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks and the heroism of those who died trying to save others. This day can serve as help for us to keep our eyes on Jesus, who is our life’s goal and salvation. Jesus tells us to work for those things, which do not perish. We’ve seen how fast two of the tallest buildings in the world can be destroyed. Let us then not lay up earthly treasures, which last but a short while; let us strive for what will truly last, namely, our relationship with God and with the community of believers in heaven.

In addition to being a day of mourning over the loss of life and property, September 11th can be for us a day of thanksgiving. We have seen how horrible we can sink in these terrible acts of terrorism; we have also seen how high we can rise in the many acts of selfless heroism. Let us remember women and men, firefighters, policemen, medical personnel, and all others who worked so very hard to preserve life. The fears that rise up within us because of terrorism can be lessened as we remember those who willingly gave their lives. Jesus tells us that this is the greatest gift that anyone can make, the gift of laying down one’s life for another.

In remembering the tragedy and the heroism on this day, please keep in your prayer the 50+ folks making the prayer pilgrimage to the shrine in Carey, Ohio. Please try to come to the church building in the evening, on Wednesday, for either the mass or holy hour following. We need to pray for peace, for our world, and for our country.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Jamie

PARISH MASS AND HOLY HOUR ON SEPTEMBER 11

Fr. Matt will celebrate Mass at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 11th, to be followed by a Holy Hour.

Please come to pray for our country, for an end to terrorism, and for world peace.

.THE NEW STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The larger Stations of the Cross have arrived from Belgium and are in place. They look like the current stations, only bigger by over 50 %. We will have a blessing of the Stations at mass soon.

REMEMBERING 9/11

As we look back on the events of September 11, 2001, recalling the death and destruction brought on by the acts of terrorism at the World Trade Center and at the Pentagon, let us pray. Let us pray for peace among all peoples of the world; let us pray for our country; let us pray for all those killed or hurt by acts of terrorism; let us pray that we do not lose sight of the God who loves us.

Included today are words from Abraham Lincoln, written some one hundred forty years ago, words that remind us how much God has blessed and continues to bless our nation.

"We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven;

we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity;

we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation

has ever grown.

But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand

which preserved us in peace and multiplied and strengthened us,

and we have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts,

that all these things were produced by some superior wisdom and

virtue of our own.

Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient

to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud

to pray to the God that made us."

Sessions will begin on September 16 at St. Pius X Parish in Bedford at 7:00 pm, in the church. St. Martin’s has joined up with St. Wenceslas, St. Pius X, and Holy Trinity to make a four-parish effort. If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, call the rectory. If you would like to be on the team, let Fr. Jamie or Fr. Matt know.

PARENT BAPTISM CLASS

The next scheduled class will be this Sunday, September 8, at 1:30 pm, in the church. This class is for expectant parents and for parents of a newly born baby who have not yet participated in any Baptismal Class. Attendance at this class is a must as part of the preparation for the Baptism of your child. If you are planning a Baptism during the fall months, please attend. The next class will be held on December 8.

HEALING HUMOR

Here’s one from Henny Youngman: My wife hit the ceiling yesterday–she’s always be a lousy shot.

(from HENNY YOUNGMAN’S 10,000 ONE-LINERS, 1989)

Jesus doesn’t want us taking shots, whether gunshots or potshots, at one another because of anger or disagreement. Rather, he presents to us a formula for fraternal correction to preserve the peace and unity in our church and in our families. The greatest weapons we can bear in our fight against evil are the spiritual weaponry of the Holy Spirit. We will overcome our hatreds by making our enemies our friends. Let’s remember that as we approach 9/11, the first anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City.

MEN’S CATHOLIC FELLOWSHIP MEEETING

The next meeting will take place Saturday morning September 14. Coffee and a light breakfast at 7:30 am, prayer and discussion from 8:00-9:00am.

This month’s theme will be "The Measure of a Man, Forgiveness". Bible test will refer to Matthew 5:23-34, 18-15-17,21-35.

We are an expanding group of parish men who desire to grow spiritually and develop friendships with those having similar desires. Open to all Men of the parish, no cost.

Thanks to all those who participated in making the August kick-off meeting such a great experience. Your enthusiasm and strong singing voices were a real inspiration.

ATTENTION EVERYONE

Music is an integral part of our worship and has the power to better focus our mind, body, and soul on the Lord’s presence. If you enjoy praising God through music why not consider becoming a member of our music ministry team either by lending your voice or playing an instrument?! You can join the Sunday Choir, the Contemporary Guitar Ensemble, the Funeral Choir, the Hand bell Choir, or you can be a cantor. Perhaps you want to form a group of your own such as a Youth Choir or a Praise and Worship Team. The possibilities for your involvement are endless. If you have any questions or would like to be a part of the music ministry team please contact Jason Falkofsky at 216-475-4300 ext. 14.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE -- SEPTEMBER 11

As we approach the 1-year anniversary of the evil attacks of 9/11, we approach with a spirit of prayer and with faith that goodness will overcome evil. On Sept. 11th we will be tolling the Church bells (8:48 to 10:28am) to mark the first attack (8:48) and the fall of the second tower (10:28) of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, and the downing of the Flight in Pennsylvania. Fr. Matt will preside at a Mass of remembrance, justice, peace and reconciliation at 7pm on Sept. 11th in the Church (Bells will also be tolled at 7pm in solidarity with neighboring Churches). This will be followed by a Holy hour of prayer for the consolation of the nation. All are invited. There will also be a novena of prayer leading up to the anniversary. To join in this 9 days of prayer please pray a rosary each day for the following intentions: Sept. 3rd) That people may be faithful to Prayer in good times and bad. 4th) That people may benefit from Fasting for a good intention periodically (Try to fast today). 5th) That as followers of Christ we may Teach truth. 6th) That people may resolve conflicts through effective Dialogue. 7th) That people will be resolved in Witnessing with integrity to the strength of their faith in God at all times. 8th) That all Americans unite behind the heroic rescue & service personnel of 9/11 by giving loving Service to others before self. 9th) That we may act and be in Solidarity with all of God’s children worldwide, especially those in developing nations. 10th) That we may always embrace Hope for the future. And Sept. 11th) That the world may find healing by Looking Back through our grief at 9/11 and be empowered to Move Forward in Freedom, Justice, Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity.
