A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
When we forgive someone, we choose not to hold a grudge against him or her. When we reconcile, we move to a new plateau in our relationship where the needs of all parties are heard and respected. In families we can forgive someone without even speaking. Reconciling is more difficult, for we must involve the one who has hurt us. Reconciliation takes time and effort but it is an essential ingredient of the Kingdom of Heaven.

FROM THE PASTOR
Dear friends,
These September days have been hot and sunny. Yet, we know that fall is not far away. Officially, autumn begins next weekend. The heat of the day will give way to cooler evenings and nights until the days themselves cool off and bring with them occasional rains. Nature is brewing for us a change in season. Treasure the days; enjoy the brightness of the sun, the chill in the air, the mist of the rain. All are gift from God.
So, too, is Gods gift of the work which accompanies the changing of seasons--the raking of leaves, the cleaning of gutters, the winterizing of hearth and automobile, the exchange of summer clothing for fall fashions. These bustling days are days to be aware of how much our God loves us, loves our families, loves our church, loves our world. When God decided to become one of his creation, God did not choose to become an angel, nor a horse, nor a tree, nor a rock. God became human. How much our God loves us. He gave us the gift of himself through his Spirit. We have his Word, his Sacraments, his Church.
When we bring that Spirit into the mix of our human challenges, the dark clouds of problems dissolve in the sunshine of his love. May that love penetrate those involved in the Maple Heights teachers strike. May that love bring peace into our world torn apart by division and hatreds. May that love bring healing into a church scarred by the abuse of our young.. And, may that love promote a true, growing vibrancy in our parish.
May God bless your life this week!
Your friend,
Fr. Jamie
PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING
Many thanks for all your prayers and petitions for the beautiful pilgrimage of 51 persons to "Our Lady of Consolation Shrine" in Carey, Ohio and for prayers and attendance at the mass and holy hour here this past Wednesday, 9/11. Your prayers are necessary and powerful.
Thanks as well to all those present and those praying for the new mens prayer and fellowship group which met for the second time.
What a blessing your prayers are!
THE CHURCH ROOF
Our maintenance man, Ed Spychola, will be working on the church roof during the next few weeks. Lets hope that this project will help prevent water from leaking into the body of the church.
CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
This Sunday is designated as Catechetical Sunday throughout the country. The primary catechists of our young, as you know, are their parents. We are blessed to have many dedicated people who serve in the religious formation of our children. Pray for them, thank God for them, encourage them to be what they teach by living out their Catholic faith.
SPIRITUALITY..STARTS WITH SUNDAY
Spirituality is the buzzword today. For us Catholics, the source of our spirituality begins with the churchs liturgyour public worship togetherparticularly in the experience of Sunday Mass. All we need to satisfy our deepest yearnings and to grow in our spiritual life is offered to us at Mass.
We hear people say or have said it ourselves, "I go to Mass, but I dont get anything out of it." Our culture, constantly bombarding us with images and sounds that seek to divert, persuade and compel somethingoften a purchaseis very good at deadening awareness.
Herein I offer some helps to bring something to Mass.
Awake, o my soul. Want to grow spiritually? We absolutely must be awake, attentive, engaged in, and contributing to what goes on around us. This includes fully participating in being present, in song and in silence, in responses, in listening, in sharing Eucharist, and in being Eucharist.
Gods word. With open ears, mind and heart, Gods word will speak directly to us. Whether we need a word of comfort, encouragement, challenge, affirmation, insight, or direction, this word is there for us.
Prayer and song. Just as at a family birthday party, we would all sing Happy Birthday, so at mass we are all to open our mouths in prayer and song. As we do so, our singing and responses become contagious and heart-felt.
Together, we pray. Mass prayers are not just for the celebrant, but belong to all present as is the offering of bread and wine a symbol of the gift from each one of us back to God.
Wholly in Gods presence. God is present within us not just at mass, but at every moment. We need to be aware that God is present, then, in our neighbors, at home and in the church. We make our gifts for the well-being of the church, we make signs of peace for the well-being of all her members.
Continuing the journey. Liturgy does not end when we are dismissed. We are to go in peace to live and love the Lord present in the world. In experiencing Christs real presence for one hour a week at Mass, we are to see and know his real presence the other one hundred sixty-seven during the rest of the week in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

HOW CAN I BECOME CATHOLIC?
The answer to this question lies in the process called RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). What is shared is knowledge for life, the knowledge of Jesus as Lord, and how he calls us to live. RCIA kicks off on September 16 at St. Pius X Parish in Bedford. St. Martins has joined up with St. Wenceslas, St. Pius X, and Holy Trinity to make a four-parish effort. If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, call the rectory. If you would like to be on the team, let Fr. Jamie or Fr. Matt know.

The fall season is upon us and basketball sign-ups are just around the corner. Sign-ups will be done in person on September 26 and 30 between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, in the lobby of SMT School. HEALING HUMOR
A convention keynote speaker spoke for over two hours. Then he apologized to the assembly for going over his allotted time. He said, "Im sorry I spoke so long, but you see, I never wear a watch."
Someone from the audience said, "But there is a calendar on the wall behind you."
(from GENE PERRETS FUNNY BUSINESS, 1990)
The way the Lord wants us to forgive cannot be measured by time or the number of times we are called upon to forgive. The Lord wants us to forgive every time, fully and completely, holding no grudge. He wants us to be like him, who spoke from the cross, "Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing."

SMT DAY SCHOOL NEWS
The school is very proud to say "Thank You!" to Becca Stanoszek, Hayley and Molly Grunau, and David and Nickie Mlakar. They hosted a lemonade stand and earned $17.52, which they donated, to the West Side Catholic Center. Our students are learning how important it is to be Christ for one another and to share our blessings without brothers and sisters. We hope that their example will influence others to do the same. Any donations that you may wish to contribute can be made through the school since we have an ongoing service project with the center. The West Side Catholic Center appreciates all your donations.
The SMT School Community would like to extend a big THANK YOU! to the countless volunteers who worked so hard this summer cleaning and painting the school building. Close to 900 hours of time were donated to this worthwhile cause. The building looks wonderful! What a wonderful way to start off a new school year. God Bless each and everyone of you for your time and dedication to our school children.
