29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

The Lord is king and there is no other. We are to render to God, therefore, fitting praise and service, as is God’s due. God’s word to us, in turn, is a matter of power and strength, to be lived with conviction of heart.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear brothers and sisters,

Once again, I say to you that October is Respect Life month. With the horrible terrorist car bomb attack killing hundreds in Bali, Indonesia; with the Washington, DC, sniper having murdered at least nine people, seemingly at random; with the imminent threat of our nation going to war with Saddam Hussein and Iraq; such violence can make us callous to the precious gift of life in all its dimensions. We could be concerned only with what is mine–my house, my job, my health, my family, my money, my life. Acts that disrespect life cannot only take away our lives; they can also rob us of appreciation for life in all its dimensions.

This is why in October we preach the value of life. We collect food for the hungry; blankets for the homeless and the needy; help for the helpless and disadvantaged. Only sin with its negative effects that downsize our concern for others can twist our hearts, minds, and spirits, away from the truth about life. God’s grace reminds us of how precious each life is. God’s grace leads us to share our goods with those who have needs. God’s grace encourages us to see each person as a treasure of unlimited value. God’s grace leads us on a journey toward peace among nations and people and to developing mutual respect for one another.

May these days in the last third of October teach us to be more like the Christ, the compassionate one, the healer of body and spirit, the lover of life. May we truly love others the way God loves us.

Respectfully yours,

Fr. Jamie

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?

The RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process has been a personalized, meaningful way for many adults to explore their desire in the Catholic Faith. If you want to know Jesus as Lord; if you want to share in the faith millions know as Catholic, then the RCIA is for you. RCIA continues on Monday, October 21, at St. Pius X Parish, 400 Center Road in Bedford, beginning at 7:00 pm. St. Martin’s has joined St. Wenceslas, St. Pius X, and Holy Trinity to make a team effort. If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, call the rectory. Talk to Fr. Jamie or Fr. Matt.

LOOKING TO HIRE

A DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

St. Martin’s is interviewing people interested in serving the parish as a director of religious education. This full-time position entails being principal for the PSR program, coordinator of sacramental programs (First Communion, Confirmation, RCIA), and administrator for other educational programs involving both children and adults. Direct your inquiries to Fr. Jamie at the parish office.

EXCERPTS FROM BISHOP PILLA’S

VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

(To give an overview of Bishop Pilla’s message, we continue in this and the following parish bulletins excerpts to enhance our knowledge and understanding of the process.)

"In addition to the opportunities for worship and reception of all the sacraments, a vibrant parish, alone or in collaboration with other parishes, must be able to offer religious education on all levels. We have always prized our Catholic schools. We deeply care about quality religious education programs such as our Parish Schools of Religion and youth ministries. Adult religious education and formation opportunities, programs for strengthening family life, young adult programs…all these must also be regularly available and strengthened.

"A vibrant parish reaches out to the world around it and genuinely cares about the needs of the poor and those who are less fortunate. A vibrant parish must inspire in its parishioners a care for its members and its neighbors. We know that the ‘neighbors’ of any parish include the surrounding community with its many different people, the Diocese, the nation, our universal Church and the whole of the society in which we live. We must be a sharing community to bear the name Catholic. The Church in the City initiative has further defined this call to serve the common good of our cities and regions. It is also clear to us that as Church, and especially as individual members and local communities in the Church, we must be involved in forming a just society."

We are still in need of Altar Servers and Eucharistic Ministers for the All Saints Day (11/01/02) if you are able to serve, please use the sign-up sheet on the door of the Usher's Room. Thank you.

A FAMILY PRESPECTIVE

Differences are inevitable in family life. But don’t be like the Pharisees in today’s gospel who were trying to trap Jesus. They didn’t care about the truth. They just wanted to win! To be right!! Peace can exist only when we pursue the truth with love

HEALING HUMOR

At the amusement park, Mr. Johnson weighed himself on one of those old-fashioned penny machines that delivered a card with a fortune printed on it. The formidable Mrs. Johnson plucked it from her husband’s fingers and said: "Let me see that! Ah, it says: ‘You are firm and resolute, have a decisive personality, are a leader of men, and are attractive to women.’"

Then she turned the card over, studied it a moment, and said, "And they’ve got your weight wrong as well."

(from Isaac Asimov’s TREASURY OF HUMOR, 1971)

If we want to get it right with Jesus, we need first to give our lives to the Lord, before we give ourselves to work, or another person, or to our country. If there is a conflict between following God and following ‘Caesar,’ let us have the moral courage to follow our convictions in faith.

LIFE ISSUES

Many Christians throughout the world, especially in Africa the Middle East and the far eastern countries, are persecuted and murdered for their faith in Jesus Christ. We in the United States can do something to help our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world by praying for them. And at the same time let us also pray for our most vulnerable brothers and sisters, the unborn in the wombs of their mothers, which is even a more dangerous place to be than in a non-Christian country risking death for being a follower of Christ. Lord, we ask that you bestow your grace of conversion on those who persecute your people, both born and unborn, so that they may came to know you so as to turn away from their persecution of "Life".

The month of October is designated ‘Respect Life Month". Every weekend during October St. Martin’s will make a special effort to support Womankind, an organization that provides high quality prenatal care and a full range of support services to pregnant women and their families at no cost to the client. The support we offer them is our donations of paper products (paper towels, Kleenex, bathroom tissue) and disposable diapers. Every weekend during October a collection will be made of these products. We humbly ask for your help. Place your contributions in the vestibule of the church. Your support is truly appreciated. Thank you for your support!

PETERSON NUT FUNDRAISER

Tis the Season! St. Martin of Tours School will be selling delicious candies and fresh-roasted nuts from the Peterson Nut Company. Please look over the brochure and place you order in the "Peterson Nut Order Box" located in the back of the church, no later than Tuesday, November 12. We will make a 52% profit on all orders. Thank you for your continued support of our school.
