30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

We are to love the Lord with our whole heart, and our neighbor as our self. By fulfilling these two great commandments, we hope to become models of faith and imitators of the Lord who gave himself totally for our sakes.

NURSING HOME VISITATION–

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Our priests and deacon visit parishioners in nursing homes by request. As a rule nursing homes do not contact us if a parishioner becomes a resident in their home. That is left for family members or friends to inform us. Last week, Fr. Jamie visited our people at Marymount Hospital and Brentwood Nursing Home in Sagamore Hills.

SMT FOOTBALL RAFFLE

Please send back you tickets and the monies. The games begin next week. Winners will be notified. Place the returns in the collection or mail them to the rectory, but do it soon!!

PRIEST CONVOCATION–CANCELLATION OF MASS

Fathers Jamie and Matt will be away Monday and Tuesday for the Diocese of Cleveland, Presbyteral Convocation 2002, entitled "A New Reflection: Presbyteral Life as Culture and Contradiction." Please keep all bishops, priests, and seminarians, who will be attending, in your prayers. Due to the Convocation, the Tuesday morning mass, scheduled for October 29th will be cancelled. In its place, there will be a Communion Service with the Liturgy of the Word at 7:30 am.

In place of "From the Pastor" Frs. Jamie and Matt present the jointly composed letter below.

Dear Parishioners:

Father Matt Glaros has served as Associate Pastor at our Saint Martin of Tours Parish Community since June of 1999. He has been a meaningful part of our parish for the past three and one half years.

As many of you may know, long before his ordination Fr. Matt held a respect and love for those who serve in the Military. Recently, he asked Bishop Pilla for a change of assignment. With Bishop Pilla’s permission, Fr. Matt is currently in the process of applying to become an active duty Chaplain in the United States Air Force. His appointment as Associate Pastor here will conclude on December 30, 2002. Now, he will soon have the opportunity to minister to the members of the military at a very important time for our nation.

Father Matt has requested permission to serve in the Military because of his deep feelings that he can combine service of God with service of country. Our parish will have a farewell for Father Matt on Sunday, December 29th, beginning with his final Mass at 10:00 am, to be followed by a social in the school.

When Father Glaros leaves, given the size of our parish and the overall needs of our diocese, he will not be replaced. Saint Martin of Tours will become a ‘one-priest’ parish. With half of the parishes in our diocese having only one priest, we knew it would be just a matter of time before St. Martin’s would become one as well. That day is now fast approaching. This will require us to alter our Mass schedule and to make other necessary changes. We will also need the whole parish community to step up to the plate in all areas of ministry.

So, we ask for your prayers. Pray for Father Matt–for fulfillment in his new ministry serving as a Chaplain in the US Air Force. Pray for Father Jamie and the other members of our parish staff–that we may provide for your pastoral needs to the best of our abilities. Pray too for everyone who is part of our Saint Martin Parish Community–that we may be vibrant, enthusiastic and faith-filled disciples of Jesus Christ who is fully alive in the Holy Spirit.

Your Brothers in Christ,

Father Jamie Mazanec, Pastor

Father Matt Glaros, Associate Pastor

NOVEMBER 1: ALL SAINTS DAY

Friday, November 1 is All Saints Day, a holy day of obligation for all Catholics. Masses will be celebrated on Friday, November 1 at 7:30, 10:00 am and 7:00 pm. There will be no vigil mass on Thursday, October 31

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, IS ALL SOULS DAY

There will be a 7:30 am mass on All Souls Day morning during which we will pray for all of our deceased parishioners, relatives and friends, with a particular emphasis on those who have died in the past year. Throughout November we will display the Book of the Dead, listing all those who have died since November 1, 2001. You may write in the book the name of anyone who has died and for whom you would like us to pray.

LOOKING TO HIRE

A DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Fr. Jamie is still interviewing to find a qualified person interested in serving the parish as a director of religious education. This full-time position entails being principal for the PSR program, coordinator of sacramental programs (First Communion, Confirmation, RCIA), and administrator for other educational programs involving both children and adults. Direct your inquiries to Fr. Jamie at the parish office.

EXCERPTS FROM BISHOP PILLA’S LETTER: VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

(To receive an overview of the pastoral message found in the bishop’s letter, we are continuing to print excerpts from that letter.)

"A vibrant parish is a caring and welcoming community of faith, a place to which we come willingly, where we feel at home, where we know we can grown in our faith, where we can find God and be reconciled when we feel lost, where the emphasis is on the individual worth and dignity of every person. A parish should be, above all else, a good place in which to grow spiritually–a supportive and caring community to be proud of.

All of these opportunities require much collaboration. They demand good stewardship and the willingness to share with others–the poor with the rich, the rich with the poor, one cultural group with another. Collaboration includes sharing in the same district or neighborhood, and goes beyond to invite partnerships between parishes with different cultural roots."

A FAMILY PRESPECTIVE

It is cute when children dress in Halloween costumes and pretend, but it is sad when adults pretend to be someone else. In our families we must love, affirm and appreciate others for who they are and not for who we want them to be. Today Jesus tells us to love our neighbor! Our closest neighbor is right in our family.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?

The RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process has been a personalized, meaningful way for many adults to explore their desire in the Catholic Faith. If you want to know Jesus as Lord; if you want to share in the faith millions know as Catholic, then the RCIA is for you. RCIA continues on Monday, October 21, at St. Pius X Parish, 400 Center Road in Bedford, beginning at 7:00 pm. St. Martin’s has joined St. Wenceslas, St. Pius X, and Holy Trinity to make a team effort. If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, call the rectory. .

HEALING HUMOR

A lady told her friend about her plans to visit Yellowstone National Park. "Don’t forget Old Faithful," her friend said.

"Oh, I’m not," the lady replied, "he’s going with me."

(from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL. 7, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1989)

The ‘old faithful’ of the commandments are to love God with all we have and, then, to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. These may be easy to recite; it’s another thing to be faithful in keeping them in our everyday lives. Ask our faithful friend, Jesus–Lord and Savior–to show you in concrete ways how to live out the two greatest commandments.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

This Saturday, October 26, the Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated at the 4:30 pm Mass. Those with advanced age or suffering from physical, spiritual or emotional illness are invited to share in this Sacrament.

ANNUAL PASTA DINNER

Mark your calendar for this delicious dinner with the date of Sunday, November 24, at St. Pius X, 400 Center Rd in Bedford.

LIFE ISSUES

In his letter to the Romans (aa.36) Paul states, "For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen." This statement can be paraphrased so that it can be said that all life comes from God and all life comes through God and all life is for God. Life is for God’s purpose, He is the beginning and He is the end. As Christians we believe this to be true, therefore human cloning, genetic engineering, abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, capitol punishment, assisted suicide and any other action that interferes with God’s plan of creation and termination of life is wrong. Let us pray that God will bless all Christians with the grace to know and understand this fact and the grace and courage to stand-up and defend life at every stage, for His glory forever. Amen.
