31st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

The prophet denounces those priests who in their pride have turned away from the Law, causing others to go astray. Jesus, too, is critical of those religious leaders who fail to practice what they preach. All, rather, are called to greatness through humility and service, by sharing their lives with others.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Over 300 (a new record for attendance) priests from the Diocese of Cleveland attended the convocation held this past Monday and Tuesday at the Holiday Inn, Independence. The keynote speaker was a brother priest, Fr. Michael Papesh, Doctor of Ministry, current pastor serving Holy Spirit Parish in St. Paul, Minnesota. The theme for the gathering was ‘A New Reflection: Presbyteral (Priestly) Life as Culture and Contradiction.’

After Fr. Papesh made his presentations we priests discussed at table how his thoughts affected our individual priesthood and our collective priesthood as priests of Cleveland. We listed our hopes and concerns in three areas of challenge that Fr. Papesh expressed as central to priesthood at this time in the history of the church. Fr. Papesh said that priests need to be especially focused as: a) leaders in holiness; b) leaders of shame-lifting love; and, c) leaders in justice.

In all our discussions, the role and the relationship of priest with the people of the parish came across as very important. We live in a time of an increase in the number of Catholics, a decrease in the number of priests, the fallout of the clergy sexual abuse scandal, amidst the materialism and paganism in our culture.

To ensure that this convocation would not end up being merely two days of listening to talks and table discussions with nothing solid coming from it, a task force was formed to work up a specific plan to help renew and revitalize the priesthood based upon the three focuses listed above. Lay involvement was strongly encouraged for this process to be most effective. As a member of the priests’ council, I was a table leader at the discussions held on these topics. I also had the privilege of proclaiming the scriptural reading at Evening Prayer on Monday night.

At the closing mass on Tuesday, Bishop Pilla presided and Fr. Al Krupp (former pastor of St. Martin’s) gave a dynamic homily, full of hope for priests as he reminded us all to continue to live out and share the good news of Jesus Christ. The convocation left me and my brothers full of hope.

Hopefully yours,

Fr. Jamie

VIBRANT PARISH LIFE (VPL)

COMMITTEE MEETING

The next meeting for the VPL committee is on Monday, November 4, at 7 pm in the school.

EXCERPTS FROM BISHOP PILLA’S LETTER: VIBRANT PARISH LIFE

(To receive an overview of the pastoral message found in the bishop’s letter, we are continuing to print excerpts from that letter.)

"Vibrant parish life is the best way for us to manifest the presence of Christ and to inspire others to embrace Christ more profoundly. This quality of parish life is a reality in many places. If all Catholics are to experience vibrant parish life, we will need to sustain and expand the vital ministries we now have, while discerning new and creative means of providing ministry in the future. We also need catechesis in order for our people to understand and support this vision of vibrant parish life.

"Let us consider for a moment the consequences if we do not take action now to ensure vibrant parish life throughout our Diocese. If we simply continue the status quo, we may see the day when we will be a Church in decline because our parishes and our ministries have become weakened by fewer staff and diminished resources.

"Failing to act now may mean that the evolving reality will impose more difficult situations upon us; circumstances may take the choice out of our hands. Right now, we have options. Engaging in a process of renewal can lead to a fuller, vibrant parish life for those who participate. Failing to act will lead inevitably to diminished parish life."

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Joseph reminds us today that we are all students. God isn’t finished with us yet. Our family is a group of unfinished people. When we help each other grow and develop we become partners with God and God with us.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?

The RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process has been a personalized, meaningful way for many adults to explore their desire in the Catholic Faith. If you want to know Jesus as Lord; if you want to share in the faith millions know as Catholic, then the RCIA is for you. RCIA continues on Monday, November 4, at St. Pius X Parish, 400 Center Road in Bedford, beginning at 7:00 pm. St. Martin’s has joined St. Wenceslas, St. Pius X, and Holy Trinity to make a team effort. If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, call the rectory. .

The straight and narrow path would not be so narrow if more people walked on it.

HEALING HUMOR

A college sophomore came home for the weekend at Halloween. Mom asked him: "How are things going?" He said, "Good." The mother asked another question: "And life in your dormitory?" He again said, "Good." Mom tried a different tack, "They’ve always had a strong football team. How do you think you’ll finish this year?" One more time the son replied, "Good." Changing the subject, mom asked: "Have you decided on your major yet?" He said, "Yes." She said, "What is it?" His final answer: "Communications."

(from READER’S DIGEST LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE, 1997)

Jesus was the master of communications. He told it the way He is. When he tells us to be humble, to be aware of our right relationship with God, with others, and with creation–he shows his words to be real by the example of humble living. The Son of God humbled himself by becoming human and taking up the cross. We must do the same if we wish to be exalted with him in heaven

CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP

The next meeting will take place Saturday, November 9. Coffee and a light breakfast at 7:30 am, prayer and discussion from 8:00-9:00 am.

This month’s theme will be "Vigilance, the Day and Hour You Do Not Know". We’ll discuss what motivates us to be prepared for the Lord’s return. Is it out of love of God or fear of punishment?

We are an expanding group of parish men who desire to grow spiritually and develop friendships with those having similar desires. Open to all Men of the parish, no cost!
