32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

We seek many things in this life, but we should seek first the Lord and his wisdom. By so living, we will keep vigil for the Lord as we await his return in glory.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

You and me, we are partners in bringing the Body of Christ into being in our parish community. We have several areas of mutual responsibility.

First, in PRAYER. As pastor and priest, I am committed to pray for the Church, including you, at daily Mass and at least five other times each day in the Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the ‘Breviary’ and ‘the Prayer of Christians’.) In turn, you should pray for us priests, by name, each day.

Second, in WORK. My primary work is to teach and preach as Jesus did. You are obligated to share in this teaching ministry by learning the faith, witnessing for Jesus, and teaching the faith at home and elsewhere.

Third, in SPEECH. I am required to correct you by speaking the truth in love. You have the responsibility to encourage me and to avoid gossip, a spiritual cancer in the Christian community.

Fourth, in OBEDIENCE. I am to proclaim what the Church teaches. As I am responsible for being in obedience to the Lord, to the Church, and to the Bishop, so must we all be under authority to be in authority in God’s order.

Finally, in SUFFERING. This is the toughest one for me because I am to find joy in any sufferings I endure for you or even from you. I am to do penance not only for my sins but for all our sins as well. You are called upon to suffer and sacrifice, too, as a means of support for me, your pastor, and to love the Church.

You can see that the work the Lord has for us requires us to collaborate, to work together, to pray together. Let us renew our desire to do so that our parish will be know as the place and people in whom Christ dwells.

Your partner in the Lord,

Fr. Jamie

IS THIS YOUR TIME TO BECOME CATHOLIC?

The RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process has been a personalized, meaningful way for many adults to explore their desire in the Catholic Faith. If you want to know Jesus as Lord; if you want to share in the faith millions know as Catholic, then the RCIA is for you. RCIA continues on Monday, November 11, at St. Wenceslas Church on Libby Road, beginning at 7:00 pm. St. Martin’s has joined St. Wenceslas, St. Pius X, and Holy Trinity to make a team effort. If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, call the rectory.

HEALING HUMOR

Peters learned she was being fired. She went to the head of human resources. "Since I’ve been with the firm so long," she said, "I think I deserve at least a letter of recommendation."

The human resources director agreed and said he’d have the letter the next day. The following morning Peters found a letter on her desk. It read, "Jeannette Peters worked for our company for eleven years. When she left us, we were very satisfied."

(from GET A LAUGH, edited by Joe Claro, 2000)

The foolish virgins thought that the bridegroom would be satisfied with them even if their lamps were out of oil, even if their flames went out. Neither will the Lord be satisfied with us if, when the bridegroom comes, we are not aflame with the fire of the Holy Spirit leading us into works of compassion done in the name of Jesus.

WE NEED A DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

St. Martin’s needs a qualified person to serve the parish as a director of religious education. The position entails being principal for the PSR program, coordinator of sacramental programs (First Communion, Confirmation, RCIA), and administrator for other educational programs involving both children and adults. Direct your inquiries to Fr. Jamie at the parish office.

ST. MARTIN’S CLOAK FUND supports our monthly dinner at St. Augustine’s Hunger Center as well as our fellow parishioners in need of emergency assistance. Please help us to continue these important ministries by volunteering and through your financial support. Envelopes can be found in the back of the church

ST. MARTIN OF TOURS SCHOOL NEWS:

Students in grade 4 & 5 attended the production "Ramona Quimby" at the Magical Theater Company. On October 21 & 22, our 8th grade students met the 8th grade students from Holy Name Elementary School in Cleveland at Camp Christopher in Bath, Ohio. For 23 fun-filled hours they participated in a new program entitled Camp ADAPT (which stands for Adversity, Diversity, Attitude, Peers, Tolerance). They explored the issues of diversity in their lives and listened to a wonderful speaker who gave them many ideas about how to appreciate people whose lives are different from theirs. They also participated in a High Ropes Challenge Course, which involved completing various "events" set out in a course 25 feet in the air. Everyone had a great time and learned many skills that will help us in the years to come.

The 6th, 7th & 8th grade students made their annual Halloween visit to their Pen Pals at Light of Hearts of Villa. They dressed in costume and shared donuts with their buddies. The students also gave their Pen Pals handmade picture frames with their pictures in them.

GIANT EAGLE APPLES FOR STUDENTS

St. Martin is again participating in the Giant Eagle Apples for the Students Program. Giant Eagle provides the opportunity for students to get FREE computer and educational related equipment into our classrooms. Register for the program at www.gianteagle.com or call 1-800-474-4777. Our School ID Number is 2866. Supporters who registered last year are automatically registered for this year’s program. The program runs from November 3, 2002 until March 22, 2003. Help us earn these needed resources by spreading the word to co-workers, family and friends.

WELCOME NEW STUDENTS

St. Martin of Tours School would like to welcome the following families who have recently joined our school community: Blazejewski (Grade 3), Cottingham (Grade 4), Hodge (Grades 1,3,7), Holliday (Grades 3,5), Wallace (Grade 2), and Warren (Grade 3).
