Welcome
to First Grade!
Happy New
Year to all!
We are almost
finished with the first half of the school year. The
children have learned about the helpers of Jesus and how
brave they had to be to follow God's ways. They have met the
parents of Jesus through stories. Our children are working
hard to respond and sing at Mass. They have completed a book
about the special parts of the Mass.
We had read
many stories of different genre. The children have made
fiction and nonfiction books of their own. Our poems of the
Nativity are hanging in the front hall. We proudly display
our best printing on our Journey to Bethlehem papers.
In the hall,
you will also find our Mary Gardens showing fractional parts
and rotational symmetry in nature. We are counting coins,
making fact families, telling time, learning graphing, using
tangrams, solving word problems, and learning strategies to
help us solve problems.
To help us
better understand our sisters and brothers of different
nationalities, we have made time lines and organizers about
Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. We marked the days for the voyage of
Columbus.
Our
scientific thinking has been stimulated with land forms made
of clay, watching sound waves travel in water, using a model
of the ear to better understand how sound gets to us.
The new year
will bring new adventures in Science with the study of light
and our eyes, how things move, and the beautiful life cycle
of the butterfly.
We will visit
the Presidents' wives in February at the Kirtland library.
At the end of
January, we will begin formal spelling units for each week.
The Children
will begin writing a book to be published and displayed at
the annual Geauga County Catholic Young Authors Conference
in April.
Finally, we
will prepare to celebrate our Catholic education with
Catholic Schools Week.
