How do I make flash cards for Reading Vocabulary?
<>When your child brings home his/her agenda on Mondays, check the list of spelling words and reading vocabulary on the paper glued under WORDS OF THE WEEK. Children are to print the words on separate index cards or just make paper word slips and attach to white plastic ring to practice. Play games with like "Go Fish" or "Concentration". Take an empty tissue box and decorate it to make a "word bank" to "deposit" vocabulary words read fluently. Count how many are in the box by the end of the week. Every two weeks take them out and check how many are remembered. Help your child make sentences with them.First, it is important that parents reinforce the idea that these activities are important for the learning process. Next, depending on your child just do possibly 5 flash cards of each per night; where some children can do all . Lastly, make it into some kind of game, use a computer game or one of the Math links.

What is Right To Read Week
This is a week set aside each year to stress the
enjoyment
and importance of reading. Reading is important in every part of
our lives. It is also a wonderful way to learn about new things,
travel without leaving the comfort of our favorite chair,
exercise
our brains,
and even just get away from the stress of everyday life.
Here at St. Raphael we ask everyone in our school
(teachers
included) to keep track of the number of pages we read each day and
bring
the tally with the total back on Friday. During the week Mrs.
Miller
will announce each day at varied times during the week "Drop Everything
And Read". This can happen at any time of the day, so the
children
will carry the book they're reading to special classes.
What is Jesus Day?
Jesus Day is a day all of
first
grade celebrates Jesus and His love forhis y us. It is usually
celebrated on the Friday
before Memorial Day weekend.
We
have
various
activities
in each classroom and the children rotate into each classroom to
participate.
We have a special Prayer Service in church with prayers, readings, and
songs. Parents are invited to the Prayer Service and asked to
bring
a picnic lunch to have with their child immediately following the
Prayer
Service. We are outside in front of the school, weather
permitting.
After parents leave the children have other activities, a special video
about Jesus, and a special snack. Each children will receive a
special
Jesus Day book written by the children that they will keep as a
remembrance
of the day.
What is the Authors' Tea?
Authors' Tea is a time to
share
original or retolded stories written and illustrated by the children in
Room 1A. Each child will read his/her story to their parents in
attendance during an hour block of time. Two dates are set aside
so the class can be evenly divided for adequate time and space.
After
the stories are read and illustrations are shown at each session the
authors
and their parents can celebrate with punch and cookies.
What are "Trick Words"?
Trick words are words we read and write that can not be "sound out" or
"tapped out" or are spelled differently than they sound. They are
words children need to know automatically to help them read with more
fluency and be able to spell them. ****Children are to cut out
word boxes on the sheet sent home every two to three weeks and trace
over the letters of each word with red crayon/marker as they practice
them on Tuesday nights.
