Trip Plan for Kelly's Island State Park

Boy Scout Troup 810 had a great campout the weekend of July 15th through July 17th at Kelly’s island.  We arrived Friday evening and quickly set up camp. On Saturday we logged over 15 miles on our bicycles riding around the island and visited Inscription Rock, the glacial grooves and an old limestone quarry that was filled with clear blue water.  We also got to play at the beach which gave us a chance to cool off after a long day of riding.  As always there was plenty of good food and fun.

Date and Time of Departure: Friday, July 15th, 5:00pm - Old Church. Meet to pack and account for Scouts

Purpose: It’s Fun!  Relax, get some biking in to get requirements for cycling merit badge and rank.  To see some fascinating nature sites and swim off the beach.  If you need cooking requirement for First Class see Mr. Wrabel as soon as possible for approval.

Location: Kelley’s Island State Park, 920 Division Street, Kelly’s Island, OH 43438, (419) 746-2546

Directions:

  1. Turn LEFT onto E ROYALTON RD/OH-82
  2. Merge onto I-77 N toward CLEVELAND (11.6 miles)
  3. Merge onto I-490 W via exit number 161B toward I-71/Toledo (2.3 miles)
  4. I-490 becomes I-90W (25.6 miles)
  5. Take OH-2 W toward OH-58 W/ Lorain Sandusky (43.3 miles)
  6. Merge onto OH-269 N toward Lakeside/Marblehead (2.4 miles)
  7. Turn Right onto OH-163/OH-269 Continue to follow OH-163 (5.3 miles)
  8. Arrive at Kelly’s Island Ferry 510 West Main Street, Marblehead, 43440.

Cost: $40.00 per person (permission slip and fee due on or before Troop meeting on June 21st)

Estimated Time of Return: Sunday, July 17th, 11:30 a.m. We will call when on the road – Parking Lot behind Old Church.

  • Extra Clothing (see handbook)
  • Camping Gear (Tents provided)
  • Bike, Helmet, and Lock & Cable (no helmet, no biking)
  • Day Pack, Water Bottle (Filled with H2O)

7:30pm Depart Marblehead to Kelly’s Island
8:00pm Arrive Kelly’s Island, unload bikes and ride to State Park
8:30pm Set up camp

10:45pm Get ready for bed
11:00pm Lights Out, Quiet Time

7:00am Reveille, Wake Up
8:00am Prepare Breakfast
8:30am Cleanup
9:00am Bike ride to Glacial Grooves and Nature Preserve
noon Stop for Cold Lunch (provided) at Inscription Rock
1:00pm Resume Bike Ride to Marina and Souvenir shops (time permitting)

5:00pm Head back to camp
